project: Brand Management
client: Windowmaster Products, regional manufacturer of vinyl & aluminum windows and sliding doors.
challenge: In 1997 Windowmaster's in-house graphics department wanted to outsource the company's
largest marketing effort to date...its full line brochure. Beginning with that project, Windowmaster
partnered with Hinge to be the "keeper of its brand". Individual product brochures, a re-branding for
the new millennium and web development in 2002 are among our accomplishments. In winter of 2004
Windowmaster was acquired by Jeld-Wen Inc., who currently markets the Windowmaster brand.

BRANDING
& DESIGN
project: Brand Identity Package
client: Windowmaster Products, regional manufacturer of vinyl & aluminum windows and sliding doors.
challenge: Rebrand Windowmaster for the purpose of an upgrade to their POP display and mate-
rials for 150 southern California Home Depot stores. Keep brand recognition. Create an image of
high style and performance.
solution: Hinge's Building BrandabilitySM Workshop discovered the company’s competitive edge
“enduring beauty and performance”. The “logo” became a type form of the company name due to
60+ years building equity in the name. The rebranded image is bold, clean and modern, projecting
well at a distance for use on POP displays. Corporate communications include a silver foil stamp.

project: Point-of-Purchase Display
client: Windowmaster Products, regional manufacturer of vinyl & aluminum windows and sliding doors.
challenge: The display should reflect the enduring stability of this 60+ year old company and rein-
force its reputation for high style and performance.
solution: A modular aluminum display was designed by Hinge and built in-house at Windowmaster,
providing an opportunity for cost-savings and brand-building. Hanging from racks covering the
window storage area, large glamour photos of WM products are supported by text, logo and actual
window samples built into the displays.

BRANDING
& DESIGN
project: http://206.169.211.86/windowmaster/docs/home.htm
client: Windowmaster Products, manufacturing vinyl and aluminum windows and sliding doors.
challenge: The company had been manufacturing and distributing their products for 65+ years
through a network of over 600 dealers in Southern California, Arizona and Southern Nevada.
Architects and builders were well-acquainted with WM but homeowners did not recognize
Windowmaster as a brand name.
solution: In the on-going pursuit of brand-building Hinge was contracted to redesign, develop and
engineer a website in 2002 that focused on the user. As well as providing technical information for
Architects and Builders, the site introduces the Homeowner and Remodeler to this enduring brand
with detailed product info and a dealer search function.
Windowmaster products are currently sold under the Jeld-Wen brand and can be found at:

BRANDING
& DESIGN
project: Visual Identity and Tagline
client: Horizons Companies, a multi-media production company
challenge: Eliminate confusion and create a single identity for the company to represent its various
divisions in three U.S. cities
solution: Brand recognition and continuity was maintained with a decision to keep the logo but change
to silver foil for a millennial update. Development of the message–Horizons Companies “know the edge”,
describes the capabilities of this high-tech entertainment/production company. It is also an invitation to
become associated with those who define what is new and exciting. The intense color palette set off by the
curved die cut of the identity package reinforce the message visually.

project: Corporate Brochure
client: Salient Networks
challenge: Create a corporate brochure to introduce the new brand identity at an upcoming
tradeshow event.
solution: Under our direction, the corporate headquarters was photographed. Each photo
communicates the brand message of flexibility, integration and visionary problem-solving while
showing off the highly functional, comfortable Salient workplace.

project: Editorial Design
client: Wheelhouse Media
challenge: In 2004 Hinge became the pre-press consultant for Carlsbad Magazine, a bi-monthly
lifestyle magazine for residents and tourists in the community of Carlsbad (a favorite SoCal vacation
destination). Success with this concept magazine led to another publication in 2007. Hinge provides art
direction, design and production for the newest "locals favorite" with distribution of 30,000 copies each
quarter.

BRANDING

project: Ad for Trade Publication
client: Strategic Biosolutions (A Strategic Diagnostics Company)
challenge: Create an ad that reinforces the brand identity of the print collateral and brand presence
online, while giving it a fresh look.
solution: The solution is clean but not clinical. Molecule image from strategicbiosolutions.com was
updated by using the bright colors on white instead of the basic black background. A new concept
was introduced here that can be built on for subsequent ads...“take a closer look”.

project: Product Catalog
client: BD Biosciences
challenge: To streamline and enhance the use of their catalog of over 6800 products. Working with
BD software engineers, we designed the catalog to include an interactive CD containing detailed
product information so that the size of the print catalog would be manageable. The turnaround
would be less than four months.
solution: Over 100,000 U.S. and International print versions of the 408-page catalogs were
delivered with interactive pdf versions on CD bound inside. Each product listing of the interactive
catalog is supported with a link on the CD to a detailed product information sheet in pdf format.
To enhance use, the CD also contains a custom software search feature.
10. Island Travel & Tours Ltd.
Island Travel & Tours Ltd. received their licenses to
operate tours from major U.S. cities to Cuba, becom-
ing one of the first legally licensed agencies in the U.S.
They approached us for a brand, designs for a web site
interface, and marketing/advertising materials. Since
travel from the U.S. is highly regulated the brand could
not reflect vacations or tourism as other travel agencies
do. We chose to use the letter forms as a visual pun on
the name by floating the word on a sea.

Integrated Communication Solutions
Salient Networks
Salient Networks’ start-up logo and identity was no
longer relevant to the innovative, communication
services and products they had become known for.
Our re-branding process included a half-day brand
discovery in which owners and department heads
contributed the defining perceptions and goals for the
new brand identity. A brand positioning document
was presented with final comprehensive logo designs
conceived to communicate flexibility and integration
with a visionary approach to problem-solving, the
defining qualities of the Salient brand.

11. Friars Folly
This local eatery used Hinge’s Building Brandability
Workshop to direct the design and development of it’s
identity: a whimsical character representing the own-
er’s vision for a fun community gathering place that sells
regional food and wine products. It was important that
the logo acknowledge the historical contribution that
Southern California missions made in bringing wines
and cheese to this region.

Women's Wellness Retreat
Held each year in Sedona Arizona, this two and a half
day retreat for women offers a wide variety of interac-
tive workshops presented by a physician and featuring
a certified life coach. Hinge provided the logo and a
direct mail brochure in 2006 and in 2007 expanded
the marketing plan to include print advertising in local
market and launched an email marketing campaign.
Close & Clever
Hinge was approached in 2007 to develop the product
design and identity for a start-up that makes clothes
for moms and other child caregivers to wear. Our bright
designs encourage babies to lift their heads which is an
important stage of development.
Brand development included the logo, design and pro-
duction of business communications, packaging and
product sales sheet as well as all photography, concept-
ing and art direction for the web site found at http://

BRANDING
& DESIGN
project: Web Development (2004)
client: http://206.169.211.86/zeroboundary/home.php (Flash) and www.zeroboundary.net
challenge: Zeroboundary's website is a training environment providing tools and services to help
science and technology professionals make the transformation from technical specialists into
managers of people, projects and processes. It's also used to market products and services. Our
recommendation was to refine the brand identity and redesign the startup site in 2004 for a more
professional user experience.
solution: The site's new branded interface design, intelligent information architecture, and highly
functional dynamic engineering displays their unique expertise to leaders in other technologies.
