2. TERMS USED IN IMMUNOLOGY
• CD: cluster of differentiation (CD1, CD2, CD3…)
• CYTOKINE: substances, such as interferon,
interleukin, and growth factors, that are secreted
by certain cells of the immune system and have an
effect on other cells.
• CHEMOKINE: a class of cytokines with functions that
include attracting white blood cells to sites of infection.
• INTERLEUKIN: are a group of cytokines that were first
seen to be expressed by white blood cells (leukocytes).
13. NATURAL KILLER (NK) CELLS
ROLE IN KILLING CELLS INFECTED BY
VIRUS AND CANCER CELLS
14. T CELLS
• ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY – CELLULAR IMMUNITY
• T helper (Th) – express CD4 – Th1, Th2, Th3, Th9,
Th17, T regulatory (Treg), T follicular (Tfh) – MHC-II
restricted
• T cytotoxic (Tc) – express CD8 – MHC-I restricted
• NKT cells
• gd T cells
15. B CELLS
• ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY – HUMORAL IMMUNITY

THE
INFLAMMATORY
PROCESS
17. Inflammation
A localized physical condition in which part of the
body becomes reddened, swollen, hot, and often
painful, especially as a reaction to injury or infection.
18. The ability of vascularized tissues to organize an
inflammatory response to lesions was an important
evolutionary acquisition, since the inflammatory
process aims to reestablish the homeostasis.
34. Almost the entire middle lobe of this right lung is involved by a chronic
abscess as seen here on section. The area of abscess is yellow tan, and it
was very firm. The infectious agent responsible here was Nocardia,
which is known to produce chronic abscessing inflammation.
