ROCKTON – As an
eighth grader, East Bridge-
water native Ryan Kelley
was too big to play youth
football in his hometown.
So the aspiring athlete headed to
Brockton to play in the East Midget
Football League where the weight limit
was higher.
A year later, tradition kept Kelley in
the City of Champions where he in-
voked his right of school choice and
opted to attend Brockton High School.
Neither Kelley nor the Boxers have
ever looked back since in what has
proven to be a perfect
pigskin match.
“We do have some
out-of-towners who
use Brockton as a
school choice destina-
tion – Ryan, and Aug-
gy (Roberts) and An-
thony (Davis),” said
Brockton High football coach Peter
Colombo. “Anyone who chooses to
come over here and takes on the chal-
lenge of trying to play here, knowing
that there’s some real good players in
our program who
would be playing a lot
in other places, I re-
spect a football player
wanting to do that.”
Kelley became part
of the Boxers’ football
family right away as a
ninth grader, making
the varsity to mark the beginning of
what has turned out to be an impressive
high school career.
“I remember freshman year, coming
over here and actually making the team
was a huge feat in my mind,” Kelley
said. “Just knowing all the tradition and
just always hearing stories about Brock-
ton football always winning champi-
onships, I felt like it would be a good
thing to be a part of this tradition.”
Kelley adds, however, that his deci-
sion to attend Brockton High wasn’t
based solely on the opportunity to play
“I felt like it would be
a good thing to be a
part of this tradition.”

HITMAN – As the Abing-
ton High football team as-
sembled on the practice
field at Whitman-Hanson
Regional High School Thursday in
preparation for its EMass Div. 4 Super
Bowl matchup against St. Mary’s at
Curry College in Milton on Saturday,
the Green Wave did so with a full stable
of running backs.
Abington High (11-0) has benefited
from a trio of running backs that has
given the Green Wave great balance and
made its offense hard to game plan
against.
“That’s one of the things we work
on as a program,” said Abington High
coach Jim Kelliher. “We tell the kids

Point guard defends
role in Nets’ brawl,

WALTHAM – He reacted in an
instant after watching teammate
Kevin Garnett knocked to the floor
via a hard foul.
The moment Celtics point guard
Rajon Rondo saw Garnett pushed
while in the air by Kris Humphries
on Wednesday night, he went right
after the Brooklyn Nets forward, be-
ginning an altercation that wound up
in the front-row seats.
“Well, I thought the play on
Kevin was a malicious play,’’ said
Rondo after practice on Thursday
afternoon. “I got hurt last year on a
similar play like that, a guy going up
in the air defenseless on his way
down. And you know, I just pushed
Humphries, and after that, it was a
pushing war.’’
The NBA disagreed with that
assessment, regarding the incident
as a bit more than just pushing and
shoving.
Rondo was hit with a two-game
suspension for his part in the scuffle
that occurred with time running out
in the first half. He will not play
tonight against the Portland Trail
Blazers at the TD Garden or Satur-
day night in Milwaukee against the
