organisation we can devise, its
success depends on the people
working in it – and for it.”

“ ... Engineering is not a science.
Engineering design makes use of laws to

Welcome, good evening, thank you for coming.
Introduce myself and colleagues.
Will try to keep it informative but short on slides if possible.
Open with a brief video to give an overview of the firm.
We are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services.
In 1946, philosopher and engineer Ove Arup set up his consulting engineering business in London. In the more than 60 years that have followed, the business has grown into an international consulting firm of unparalleled scope, owned in trust for its employees and using the business principles that Ove Arup first set out – and which he articulated for posterity in 1970 in his forward-looking ‘key speech’.
How many of you know who this is?
Our founder, Sir Ove Arup, opened the firm in 1946. Prior to studying engineering, he studied philosopher. This crucial differentiator has shaped our firm and continues to shape our direction.
To know where we have come from is to understand where we are going.
Prior to retiring, he wrote what is now known as the Key Speech. It is available for download on our website and is critical reading for anyone considering joining the firm. It sets out our aims and objectives as members of the Arup community.

- an enduring set of values
- a unique trust ownership which fosters a distinctive culture
- and an intellectual independence that encourages collaborative working
We are independent. With no external shareholders or investors we are free to spend, invest, train, research and develop the areas that we are interested in.
Our business model is simple. 60% of earnings are re-invested into the firm, our staff and our training. The other 40% is divided equally into profit share bonuses that are rewarded twice per year regardless of performance. It is a reward for being part of the Arup community, that grows with each year of service that you give to the firm.
This is how we describe ourselves externally in the market place to clients, rather than reflective of our internal structure.
Arup now has over 91 offices across Europe, North America, Africa, Australasia and South East Asia. It has tripled in size in the last ten years, and now has over 11,000 people worldwide (in 39 countries).
This slide needs updating slightly, but the purpose is to demonstrate that we are truly diverse. Our 2015 Graduate intake comprise of 40 different nationalities. Over 10% of our intake is from outside of the UK, and we do currently support students that require visas. The government is changing the regulations around this at the moment but we welcome applications from all.
With 14 offices across the UK & Northern Ireland, as well as three offices in the Middle East and 2 in South Africa which make up the rest of the UKMEA region, currently we have over 4,000 staff.

Graduates: search for degree discipline and location, and apply to the position of interest. Register on the website for future job alerts.
Placement students: Register for email alerts on the top right. Placements will follow in November although there are now some live on the site also.
Visit our new graduate careers pages at Arup.com – you can read more about us and the work that we do, the opportunities available as well as more info on training and development and also some of our graduates share some of their experience whilst they have been with Arup.
There is an online application form to complete which is then screened by the graduate recruitment team and if suitable passed onto the business for review. Should the business want to see you, you will normally be invited to an assessment centre. This is a half day at one of our offices where you will be asked to complete a technical exercise and undergo an interview with a senior leader within the business. However, this will also be an opportunity to ask questions and find out more about us and what it is really like to work here.
If successful, we would make you an offer for a role in one of our offices across the UK, usually to start in the first week of September.
Also, we have set-up a private group on Facebook to enable those new graduates to start talking to us and each other before joining and attending our graduate induction, so you can organise events and meet some of your future colleagues before you start work.
