1. 1
Vinyl industry innovation for a circular economy
PLASTICITY, London, 21st September 2016
Roger Mottram, INOVYN, Chairman of BPF Vinyls Group
2. 2
• PVC is a ‘low carbon’ plastic (57% Chlorine, 5% Hydrogen, 38% Carbon)
• Approximately 70% is used in long-life building and construction products
• Global demand for PVC has grown to over 40 M tonnes p.a. :

“ VinylPlus can be considered as a frontrunner for the circular
economy”
Gwenole Cozigou, Director, DG GROW, European Commission
The Vinyl industry is a ‘Circular Economy’ leader
Quote from Gwenole Cozigou, DG Grow, May 2015:
4. 4
• Partnership of Vinyl manufacturers (ECVM); Converters (EuPC), Stabiliser
manufacturers (ESPA) and Plasticiser manufacturers (ECPI):
– Approximately 200 companies in Europe supporting VinylPlus
• ‘The Natural Step’ is a ‘critical friend’ of VinylPlus and provided a
framework to define ‘sustainability’ .
• 5 VinylPlus challenges identified via an open process of stakeholder
consultation:
– ‘Controlled loop management’ is one of the challenges

How is the Vinyl industry leading?
5. 5
• Since 2010 approximately 2.5 Million tonnes of PVC recycling have been
achieved in Europe
• The industry is on target to fulfil its commitment:
Commitment to achieve 800,000 tonnes p.a. of PVC recycling in
Europe by 2020:

• Independently audited annual ‘Progress Reports’ are overseen by a
‘Monitoring Committee’ comprising representatives of the European
Parliament and Commission, Unions and NGOs.

7. 7
• For each kg of PVC recycled, approximately 2 kg of CO2 are saved
• 177 certified PVC recyclers engaged in VinylPlus
• Over €100 M invested in PVC recycling since 2000
• €800 M annual turnover from recycled PVC for converters
• 3,000 employed for PVC recycling in Europe
• 514,913 tonnes of post-consumer PVC recycled in 2015
• Achieving economies of scale

Benefits of vinyl recycling
8. 8
“A wide range of actions have been pledged, such as……recycling
800,000 tonnes of polyvinyl chloride (commonly known as PVC) –
one of the most widely used plastics – per year. “
Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary General
Quote from keynote speech by Ban Ki Moon, Rio+20, June 2012 :

Rio+20 Earth Summit
9. 9
• 72 project entries from 17 countries across 5
continents
• 24 of the project entries (1/3rd) are recycling
projects:
– 12 using recycled content in new products
(between 25% to 100% recycled content)
– 6 new designs to facilitate recycling
– 6 new recycling processes
• Winners will be announced at the INOVYN
Awards Ceremony in Dusseldorf on 20th October
2016
INOVYN Awards for innovation with Vinyls:
VinylPlus has stimulated innovation
10. 10
• Everyone involved wins:
– Health service saves money
– Hospital staff are highly motivated
– Demonstrates the importance of good ‘design for recycling’
– Recyclers obtain a valuable recyclate
