This document defines and describes various terms related to type and fonts, including: a typeface is the name of a font while a font is a set of glyphs of a specific typeface, size, boldness, and italics; uppercase and lowercase refer to capital and smaller letters; numerals express numbers; glyphs include letters and punctuation marks; point size measures font size; leading is the distance between lines of text; alignment styles include left, right, and center; kerning and tracking refer to adjusting spacing between letters or lines of text; and dingbats are fonts where symbols represent letters.

1. Describing Type

2. • Typeface/Font - A typeface is the name of the font like ‘Times New Roman’ and a
font is a set that’s made up of something called a Glyph which has a specific
typeface, size (6.2), boldness and if its in italic etc.
• Upper case/Capitals - Upper case characters are capital letter such as ‘DOG’ than
‘dog’ which is lower case.
• Lower Case - Lower case characters are smaller letter such as ‘small’ opposed to
‘SMALL’ which is upper case.
• Numerals - A word that expresses a number.
• Glyph - A hieroglyphic character. Other common Glyphs are things such as
question marks, exclamation marks, symbols, Asterisk.
• Point size - Point size is a measure of a font size.
• Leading - Leading is the distance between lines of type

3. • Alignment styles - This is the way the type is aligned with something or if its
central, left or right on a page.
• Kerning - This is adjusting the space between pieces of type.
• Tracking - This is the spacing between letters in a line or block of text.
• Dingbats – A Dingbat is a symbol that is also a font so each letter represents a
symbol.
