In thisplay,we mustbe the voice of the voiceless. Isthere anywordmore terrifyingthan“rape”? Thisis
the word thatwill make people shiver.Thisisthe wordthatwill angerpeople.Thisisthe wordthat will
make people leave.Butwe are not doingthisforthose people.Certainly,theywill be affectedbyit,as
well theyshouldbe.Butthisisnotfor them.
Thinkof the worstthingsthat can be done to people bypeople.Didyouimmediatelythinkof murder?
Rape is justas horrendous.Itisan inhumanact,and yetit isremarkablyunreported.We donotknow
the storiesof murdervictims—there isnomeansof survival.Yet,withrape,there isnorelease.There is
simplypaineveryday. The survivorsachingwiththose unheardstorieswill seeourshow.
Thisshowis forthose people.Thisstoryisforthe female 1 in5, and the male 1 in13. Thisshow is to
breakthe silence.Thisshowistotell their stories.Thisshow isforthemto lookto theirleftorright and
see anotherperson—thisistoshattertheirisolation. Thisshow isforthose healingheartstosee the
wrongsdone to them condemned.The survivorsthatwill come tothisshow wantdesperatelytobe
representedasexactlythat-survivors andneveragainvictims. We mustgive themthatsatisfaction.In
thisshowwe must recognize theirpain,recognize the wrongdone tothemasexactlywhatitis:heinous
and inhuman.We mustshowthema worldoutside of theirlonelydarknessandfearandcreate a
communitywillingtostandbehindthem.Thisshow isforsurvivors.Maywe give themstrength,solace,
and a fearless,unrepressedvoice.
