2. NEWSThe Metropolitan Drug Commission is proud to
announce Scott Payne as its newest executive director.
A Knoxville native, Payne Cares for the wellbeing of his
community. He has served as a board member for the Tennessee
Alliance of Information Systems and Circle Canter Consulting. Payne
looks forward to getting involved with different organizations that
align with the MDC mission.
MDC Board President, Keith Goodwin adds, “The board is thrilled
to have Scott join the MDC team. He will be a wonderful asset to our
organization.”
We will be providing tobacco
education with the Kiwanis Fresh
Air Camp, YMCA, and Boys and
Girls Clubs. The average age of
smoking initiation amongst youth
is 12 years old.
It is important that we teach the
dangers of tobacco use as
early as possible to prevent the
initiation of tobacco use. We are the
evidence-based curriculum,
Project Towards No Tobacco Use.
The skills they will learn from this
program will not only teach
refusal skills against tobacco, but it
will also help the kids refuse other
destructive decisions.

How did you first become involved with our coalition?
I heard about the coalition through a coworker and
immediately became involved due to all the great work
that is done for the community.
Tell us a bit about New Life Lodge and its services.
New Life Lodge offers medical detoxification and on-site
partial hospitlization for alcohol and drug treatment as
well as cooccuring disorders.
What do you love most about New Life Lodge?
I love helping people in their time of need. I feel blessed
to have a job in which I can be of service to the commu-
nity. I think most families are touched by the disease of
addiction at one time or another, and I am lucky enough
to offer them help when they need it the most.

Knox County Beer Board Raises Fines
The Knox County Beer Board has increased fines to send a stronger
message to permit holders that selling alcohol to minors is a serious
issue.
When businesses are found in violation of alcohol laws, they have
two options: either don’t sell alcohol for a defined period of time or
pay a fine. More often than not, businesses choose the fine.
Previously, the fine was $500 for a first offense or a 30-day
suspension. Now, the increase will be a $1000 fine or a 60-day
suspension on first offense.
