OLIVE
It appears this sweet
girl was abandoned
in a vacant house
and rescued along
with a couple
siblings. Olive is
quite fearful of
everything around
her but is slowly
coming out of her
shell. She is learning
how to be a normal
dog, living with
humans in a foster
home. There are two
cats in her foster
home that she gets
along with just fine.
In fact, she sleeps on
the bed with one of
the cats.
We believe that Olive is a mixed breed of Labrador retriever
and Rottweiler, although we cannot be certain since we
have no idea who her parents were. She is young but has
had at least one litter of pups. She has learned quickly to
only potty outside and has never had an accident in the
house. Her foster home is working on basic training
commands such as no, sit, come, stay and leave it. Olive is
also being crate trained. She isn’t thrilled about it but will
calm down after a little while.
Olive’s coat is a soft, beautiful chocolate brown. She
currently weighs about 30 pounds but is underweight, so
she’ll possibly gain another 5-10 pounds. Olive is very
smart and intuitive. As she continues to learn, she is going
to be a very loyal addition to a new family.

Gunther is a sweet boy, a
little skinny, but we are
working on that. This mix
is smaller then your normal
American bulldog. He gets
along with everyone he
meets, kids and dogs of all
size. Gunther can’t wait to
have a family of his own.
He is house trained and
good with kids and dogs.

LAURA BELLE
Laura Belle was found in an
abandoned home with her two
sisters. We were told she was
in the house alone for about
three weeks. When she arrived
in our care we noticed that
Laura Belle had a prolapsed
uterus. She was rushed to the
vet where she has emergency
surgery to repair it and has
spent a little over a week at
the vet. Laura Belle is heading
to a foster home and will start
learning how to be a normal
dog and enjoy the luxury of
having a family who cares.
She is house trained.

to Friendship to
find another home.
She lived with kids
and was fine with
them. No other

PONCHO
Poncho is a happy, fun-loving 10-month-old pooch that you
just have to meet. He is in a foster home right now, so
please send an email to Poncho’s foster mom Mary at
volunteer@friendshipapl.org to schedule a time to meet
him. The foster family reports that Poncho is the perfect
guest. He is one happy fellow that loves toys, walks, car
rides and belly rubs. He is fully house trained. Poncho is
gentle and friendly with the foster family’s 5-month-old
puppy and the neighbor’s
senior Lab. It is not known
if Poncho likes cats.
Poncho does need time to
get to know males, but
once he recognizes a new
male as a friend they too
can give him a belly rub.
So, if you need a fun-loving
pooch, please make time
to meet Poncho.

Jack Russell mix

JACK
Jack is asking for a
little help in finding
a new home. His
owner just passed
away and he was
brought to
Friendship by a
family member. He
is excellent with his
house training. This
sweet senior
prefers women to
men, but he is fine
with both once he
gets used to men.
He can be cautious with new people. Jack knows basic
commands but only performs when he chooses, in typical
terrier fashion. He’s definitely food motivated! Jack likes
other docile dogs but has never been around cats. He likes
kids, too, but is cautious of younger ones. Probably best if
kids in the family are old than 8. If you’re looking for a
friend, Jack is too. Stop by soon.

MILEY
Meet Miley! This friendly
girl was surrendered to
Friendship because her
owner was too ill to care
for her. A relative brought
Miley to the shelter and
didn’t know anything
about her. She’s been a
great dog since her
arrival. Miley is good on
a leash and happy when
staff and volunteers visit
with her. Stop by to find
out more about Miley.
You just may be going
home with your new best
friend. Miley is featured with Friendship APL volunteer
Denise Higgins.

TISHA
Meet cute Tisha. Her photos
were taken when she just
walked in the door and she
never missed a beat and
was calm and friendly. Tisha
arrived from an overcrowded
rescue so her history is not
known. She’s young and not
totally trained but has a great
personality and would be a
wonderful companion or
family pet. Take some time
and get to know Tisha. You’ll
be very glad you did. Tisha is
featured with Friendship APL
Executive Director Greg
Willey.

ELVIRA
Elvira is one beautiful
cat.
Elvira is back at
friendship, waiting for
a her forever home.
She has been
enjoying some time
away from the shelter
in foster care since
December. Shelter life
was scary for her and
she did not like being
petted and grabbed at
by strangers. Once in the foster home she immediately
jumped on laps where she would stay for hours if you let
her. She follows you everywhere, talks to you and even
sleeps with you! She uses the litter box and scratching post
with no problems. She is a very good eater — she wants to
eat everything. Although she hisses at the family dog if it
gets too close to her, she still tolerates the dog and will
hang out near her for hours.
The downside to Elvira is that she is a little bit of a diva at
times (thus the attitude) and will hiss at you, swipe at you
and try to bite you if she is not in the mood for interaction.
This happens about 5 percent of the time each day.
Otherwise she is a complete angel!
Elvira is healthy but would have to be the only cat in the
home or live with another FIV-positive cat.
If you have kids and/or another dog in your family and are
interested in adopting a Friendship dog please bring them
with you for a meet and greet. No appointment is
necessary. Stop by anytime during regular business hours.

Be sure to clean
those canines
Did you know that 70 percent
of cats and 80 percent of dogs
have some form of gum disease
by the age of 3? Taking care of
Cooper’s canines and Fifi’s
fangs is an important part of
your pet’s care. Good thing Feb-
ruary is Pet Dental Health
Month!
To take a bite out of plaque,
bad breath and tarter buildup, I
turned to PetPeople, the natural
pet food and supply store, to
share some teeth tips with us.
“After pet obesity, it (gum dis-
ease) is the No. 1 preventable
issue with pets, and probably
more in front of mind with pet
owners than pet weight loss,”
said Terri Montigny, marketing
manager of PetPeople.
So what can we as pet owners
do to keep our pet’s mouth
clean? Montigny says there are
many tools to help us, includ-
ing toothbrushes and tooth-
pastes, food additives and oral
applications, dental health
chews and even treats. (Who
knew there were so many
options?)
Toothbrushes and
toothpaste
Let’s start with what we
humans have the most experi-
ence with … toothbrushes and
toothpaste. Montigny says the
best way to remove plaque, and
therefore avoid tartar buildup,
is to simply brush our pet’s
teeth daily.
PetPeople offers Sentry
toothbrushes and toothpaste to
make this a fun and easy
process. The Sentry Petrodex
Veterinary Strength Natural
Toothpaste is formulated
specifically for pets and uses
all-natural abrasives and
chlorophyll. This original for-
mula cleans teeth, helps reduce
tartar and plaque buildup,
fights bad breath and comes in
peanut or chicken flavor. The
Sentry Petrodex Dental Kit con-
tains a 360 toothbrush that has
an ergonomic dual texture han-
dle for a secure grip, a 360 soft
bristle brush head, a small tra-
ditional toothbrush head and
rubber plaque scraper to get
those hard-to-reach spots. This
package also includes a finger
toothbrush to gently remove
plaque and food debris, and
massage gums.
Food additives and
oral applications
So we’ve learned that brush-
ing is the best way to remove
plaque buildup from our pet’s
teeth, but what if our not-so-
docile Doxie won’t tolerate the
brushing? PetPeople suggests …
seaweed?
It’s true. ProDenPlaqueOff,
whose active element is a spe-
cial seaweed called ascophyl-
lum nodosum, fights tartar and
plaque, while reducing bacte-
ria. How, you ask? PlaqueOff is
a powder that you sprinkle on
your pet’s food. When the ingre-
dients are absorbed into the
blood via digestion and enter
the saliva, they prevent accu-
mulation of plaque by affecting
the ability of plaque to stick to
surfaces in the mouth. Pre-
existing tartar becomes porous,
loosens by itself or can be easily
removed by brushing or clean-
ing.
Besides food additives, there
also are oral applications such
as Tropiclean Clean Teeth Gel
and Tropiclean Liquid Floss.
The first works fast and natu-
rally helps to reduce plaque and
tartar without a toothbrush,
while also killing the germs that
cause bad breath. The latter is a
fun way to floss. Simply spray
the Liquid Floss on your pet’s
toy and start a game of tug-o-
war or fetch. The chewing on
the toy delivers the ingredients
through your pet’s oral cavity to
remove food particles, fight
plaque and prevent tartar. The
more you play, the healthier
your pet’s teeth will become!
Dental health chews
and chew toys
Although they may not be
marketed as such, natural and
long-lasting chews such as
Bully sticks, Earth Animal No-
Hides, elk antlers and sweet
potato chews are all great
options for dental health
chews. Montigny saids the rule
of thumb is, the longer it lasts,
the better.
Nylabones, probably the
quintessential chew toy out
there, have been used for over
50 years and come in a wide
variety of shapes, sizes and fla-
vors. Usually, the more bumps
and ridges on the toy, the more
effective it can be at scraping
and removing plaque and tar-
tar.
Dental health treats
PetPeople said that even
treats can help break up tartar.
There are a wide variety of
chew treats available that work
by mechanically scraping the
plaque off our dog’s teeth.
Unlike kibble, which is swal-
lowed within seconds, some of
these treats are long-lasting,
allowing more time for them to
be effective. A product to con-
sider is Bright Bites, which
remove plaque and tartar, are
wheat free and help promote
fresh breath with their pepper-
mint and spearmint flavors.
Use this month to commit or
recommit to your pet’s dental
health. And be sure to check
with your veterinarian before
starting any of these treat-
ments, and be sure you sched-
ule an annual dental checkup
for your pet.
