1. Term 2 Project
“What’s in the Box?”
This project is going to test how well you can make inferences (an
educated guess) about certain items that relate to one of your peers.
Below are the steps that you need to follow so that you can complete
the set activity. Have fun and good luck!
Step 1 (To be done at home)
Collect a shoe box or a box no bigger than a man’s shoe box. Decorate
your box with pictures of things that are important to you. For example,
if you are interested in reading you might like to put some pictures of
books or if you play the drums, you could find a picture of a drum kit etc.
Don’t just stick with one theme though. Make sure your pictures are
varied and cover the sides and top of your box.
Remember, don’t put any pictures on that will give away your
identity. When your box is covered it is then ready for step 2.
Step 2 (To be done at home)
You need to now put 10 items in your box that tell us something special
about you. Again, no pictures of your family or yourself because that will
give it away. You could add items such as your favourite book, CD etc.
Be inventive and try and make it difficult for the person opening the box
to guess who you are. (please don’t put anything too precious in the
box). Bring your box into school on Friday in a bag that you can’t see
through.
(Due Friday 29th July 2011)
Step 3 (To be done at school)
At school I will give everyone somebody else’s box to study. You will
then have to fill in an information sheet about the items that are inside
thinking of three reasons why that item may have been chosen by its
owner.
2. Step 4 (To be done at home)
Lastly, you will take your information sheet home and write a report
about your findings. In the report you need to write about each item and
the inferences you have made and why you made them. At the end of
the report you can take a guess on who your box belongs to.
For example, in the box I was given I found a picture of the Sydney
Harbour Bridge. This could mean that the person has been to the bridge
before or maybe they want to climb it or maybe someone in their family
works on the bridge. These are all guesses and only the real owner of
the box will know the truth.
Your report (no longer than 2, A4 pages) is due back
to school on Friday 5th August 2011.
Good luck and if you have any questions please ask
me sooner rather than later.
