6. WHAT IS RAGGING?
• Any conduct by words or act which had the effect of teasing or
treat with rudeness any persons. including a indiscipline activity
likely to cause physical harm or fear. Asking any person to do any
act which has the effects or generating a sense of sham.
• It involves insults, running errands for seniors, and many other
complex activities.

• Hazing
• Bullying
• Ledging
• Fagging
• Horse Playing and also Teasing,…etc.

8. ORIGIN OF RAGGING
• It is widely considered to have been introduced during the post-World
War-2 era. Sri Lankan soldiers returning from war re-entered the collage
educational system and brought with them the tradition and
techniques of military style ragging.
• The Ragging problem is legacy of British .
• Who imported the practice to India from elite public school back home.

9. TYPES OF RAGGING
• MILD RAGGING:
Mild Ragging is positive ,advantageous. It helps in breaking the ice
between seniors and the juniors and enables them to gel up with each
other and interact.
• SERVER RAGGING:
Server Ragging is disadvantageous, as it cause serious problems. say
mental trauma or can also instill the sense of fear in the minds and can
also cause death in some of the extreme cases.

• Lack of proper goal
• Unaware of life value
• Lack of serious concern from managements
• Fail to implement punishments
• Poor management at hostels
• Political interferences
• Media
• Caste and Religion
• Lack of training in life skills

11. EFFECTS OF RAGGING
• The victims of ragging suffer maximum in forms of depression, isolation,
demoralization and many other forms of detrimental effects on the
personality.
• In extreme cases, some people commit suicide due to the mental
pressures that develop over a period of time.

13. PUNISHMENTS(UGC,2009)
Depending upon the nature and gravity of the offense as established by
the Anti-Ragging Committee of the institution , the possible punishments
for those found guilty of ragging at the institution level shall be any one or
any combination of the following:
• Cancellation of admission
• Suspension from attending classes
• Withholding/withdrawing scholarship/fellowship and other benifits

20. ACCORDING LAW(INDIAN PENAL CODE, 1860)
There are provisions in the IPC which can be used by a student to
register an FIR in the nearest Police Station. These provisions are:
 294 – Obscene acts and songs
 323 – Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt
 324 – Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon or means

• The Indian govt has banned ragging , but still we hear many incidents
year after year

26. MY OPINION
• Ragging is analogous to harassment. Any sort of harassment, whether verbal,
physical, emotional, mental etc.
diminishes an individual, creates mental blockades, pushes him/her towards
depression and is thus harmful. Amiable interaction and motivate an individual
rather than ragging.
