Personal Statement (1st Draft)
1. Personal Statement
I have chosen this course as throughout my time in school and college I have also had a
passion for media. I thoroughly enjoy film and TV, and constantly find myself analysing shot
types and editing styles whenever I watch anything in the cinema or on TV. When I started
my creative media course in college I have developed my interest of the industry. I have also
gained the necessary skills for this course, such as videography, photography and editing, to
name a few. Pursuing this course would greatly help me in my future career, as my aim is to
become a director in film and TV.
During my time at college, I have enjoyed my media course within every aspect. I have
created two products so far, one being a short advert centred around mental health, and the
other a short documentary focused on how technology has changed and impacted different
generations of people. Throughout producing these pieces of film I have developed the skills
needed for further education in media, and am willing to develop them even more in the
remainder of my second year at college. I have gained knowledge in essential skills, such as
discerning camera shots, types and angles, as well as photography and editing skills.
I have had a lot of work experience in school and college, the most notable being my charity
store volunteering as part of my bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. Though this may not
relate to media, during this three month period I gained essential skills such as
communication and teamwork, which will and do help me in college during productions of
projects. I also worked at South Shields FC as a season ticket liaison officer, and whilst this
may not relate to media it did help me greatly improve my communication skills and my
confidence. Soon I will be starting my media related work placement, which will improve my
media skills such as videography, editing and photography, all whilst developing life skills
such as confidence.
As for extracurricular activities, I participated in the bronze Duke of Edinburgh award from
2019-2021, as it was postponed due to Covid. Partaking in the award helped develop my
resilience, as well as confidence in myself. During school I was also part of and led charity
bake sales to raise money for causes such as Children in Need and the Australian bush fires.
During my time at college I have taken part in many external visits to develop and better my
skills and knowledge about the industry. I am also an ambassador at the college, which
includes helping out at open events and enrolment events, which has greatly improved my
life skills. Outside of college, I am also taking part in the BFI Film Academy at Tyneside
Cinema. This is also helping improve my confidence, communication, teamwork and
leadership skills.
I am hardworking and motivated in everything I do, especially when it comes to the media,
film and TV industry. I have many skills that I could bring to this course and since media is a
passion of mine I believe I would be a great fit for this course. I believe I have all the
necessary skills to pursue this course and I believe I will achieve the grades necessary to do
this.
