What kind of media institution might distribute my product?
1. What kind of media institution
might distribute my media
product and why?
By Kieran Kelso
2. Publishing company?
• I believe that the best publisher for my magazine is Townsquare
Media, who also publish the universally popular hip-hop magazine
XXL. Because of this, they have a lot of experience in the genre and
will know many tips and tricks to promoting a magazine and making it
a global success as soon as possible, something which is very
important when just starting out. ‘Flow’ is a magazine designed for all
hip-hop fans, casual or hardcore, so it would be great to attract a
wide audience immediately, and I believe Townsquare know just how
to do that. This would be a great opportunity for Townsquare as my
magazine will be aimed towards a potential new audience particularly
in the UK, which will increase their profits and their share in the hip-
hop magazine market.
3. Other options
• Another company that I considered to publish my magazine was
Bauer Media Group. This publishing companies is responsible for
publishing a wide variety of magazines, from fashion to gossip to film
to music. The music magazines that they publish include Kerrang,
Mojo, Rolling Stone and Q, some of the highest-selling music
magazines in the world. However, none of these magazines belong in
the hip-hop genre, and they do not talk about the genre regularly.
This factor is why I think Townsquare is the better option, as they
have more experience in the genre and will know more about how
the magazine should be created and organised.
4. Who are Townsquare Media?
• Townsquare Media is a publishing company originally founded in
1994 under the name Regent Communications. Since 2010, the
company has adopted its current name after Regent filed for
bankruptcy which privatised the company. Townsquare have made
numerous investments since that year, such as Cumulus Media and
MOG Music Network. Their biggest acquisition, however, was
acquiring the magazines XXL, King and Antenna from Harris
Publications in September 2014.
