TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
Reference for: Mr. Junyoung Justin Sim
I’ve known Mr. Junyoung Justin Sim since August 2013 for pursuing his M.Sc. research project
under my co-supervision with Dr. Hyung-Sool Lee in department of Civil and Environmental
Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Since starting his research, Mr. Sim has exhibited
excellent potential for undertaking research. Upon joining our research at UW, he immediately
embarked on his research project work which aims to investigate the feasibility of producing
hydrogen peroxide using microbial electrochemical cells (MECs) from wastewater. He
investigated the effect of different cathode materials at different operating condition on hydrogen
peroxide production via lab and pilot-scale MEC.
He learnt the water quality analysis as well as how to operate the MEC and/or microbial fuel cell
(MFC) and summarized the literature in his area of research in a very short time. He designed,
conducted and operated both lab and pilot-scale MECs under different conditions. This clearly
attests to his excellent engineering knowledge, technical judgement, and creativity, attributes that
are precursors of a high-caliber researcher. His productivity is excellent, and as of his work
resulted in submitted refereed journal article, and two conference publications as a first author.
During his research, he collaborated with his colleagues which resulted in another two refereed
journal articles as a co-author.
Junyoung’s oral and writing skills are excellent. He is a good communicator who can
communicate his thoughts and ideas very clearly and concisely both orally and written. His
perseverance and hard work are outstanding. He is always keen on delivering his promises on-
time, and always welcomes new challenges and ideas. His pleasant personality, misdemeanor,
politeness, and openness has a positive impact on his colleagues and superiors alike. He
exhibited excellent attributes such as diligence, inquisitiveness, and persistence in knowledge
and I’m extremely impressed with his performance.
In summary, I strongly support Mr. Junyoung Justin Sim. If necessary, please feel free to contact
me at 1-519-860-3556.
