4. Culture makes us who we are
DNA of the team
Attitudes and behavior
Defines what is encouraged, discouraged, accepted or
rejected within a group
Healthy versus toxic
Culture
„What makes some teams more effective than others is culture.“
David Logan, Tribal Leadership
5. Continuous improvement. DevOps is a way, there is
always what to improve.
Fostered automation. Automate everything you can.
Encouraged collaboration.
Clear shared responsibility (end-to-end accountability).
Autonomous and empowered teams.
Transparency and trust where reaching out for a help is
not a sign of weakness.
Embracing failure, learning from it.
DevOps Culture
„The architecture of the system gets cemented
in the forms of the teams that develop it..“
Ruth Malan, “Conway’s Law”
6. Culture, not a role
Like many of IT leaders, you’re asked to not only deliver more products and services than ever before, but to do
so with greater speed and quality — and with no hits to reliability or security. DevOps seems like it will really
help! But…
How do you make a clear, convincing case for DevOps that reduces fear and converts skeptics into
champions?
DevOps is a culture, not a role! The whole company needs to be doing DevOps for it to work.
There needs to be backing from senior leadership, but also involvement from everyone with a stake
in the final product, not just development and operations departments.
7. Why Does Culture Matter?
“Businesses often forget about the culture and ultimately, they suffer for it because you can’t
deliver good service from unhappy employees.”
Tony Hsieh, CEO, Zappos
Happy teams lead to happy customers ☺.
8. Why Does Culture Matter?
Quantifying culture with customer and employee NPS
Research by Fred Reichheld - The Ultimate Question 2.0
NPS Net Promoter System
How likely are you to recommend [company name] to a friend or relative?
How likely is it you would recommend this company (or department) as a place to work?
Companies with high Customer NPS are generally more profitable.
9. Team-First Mindset in DevOps
• Smaller team size fosters trust - Dunbar’s number (fifteen to be the limit of the number of people one person
can trust deeply. Only around five people can be known and trusted closely); Amazon 2 pizzas rule.
• The Team Owns the Software - Teams have a greater chance of innovating and supporting a system if they can
understand the constituent parts and feel a sense of ownership over the code, rather than being treated like
workers on an assembly line.
• Limit cognitive load
• Diverse mix of people
• The needs of the team above individual ones
• Reward the whole team not individuals
• No serious sport team would consider not employing coaches and trainers, and no serious organization should
be without coaches and trainers either
Safe to be yourself environment,
Intentional culture of joy
