1. Canadian Women’s Club – Evening networking events summary 2012- 2014
Over the last two years we have organised a series of successful evening networking events at the
Canadian High Commission with a variety of inspiring speakers.
Our evening networking events series was launched in October 2012 where we invited endurance
racer Tiffany Saibil to speak and share her lessons learned from
endurance racing. Tiffany has raced in the Marathon DesSables (MDS),
Racing the Planet Nepal 2011, and Tor des Geants (Italy Alps 2012),
which was a racing event covering a distance of 320km.
Tiffany shared inspiring images collected from her experience and made
her experiences relevant to guests by discussing how to set goals and
overcome challenges in every area of life.
In November 2012 we hosted an event with Ayesha Mustafa, Founder
of Fashion Compassion where she shared her experience of setting up
‘woman-empowerment’ initiatives in the Middle East and Asia’.
In March 2013 we hosted an event with celebrity makeup artist Ariane Poole, Founder of Ariane
Poole Cosmetics.
In May 2013 we hosted an event with Kresse Wesling, Founder of Elvis & Kresse. Elvis & Kresse turn
industrial waste into innovative lifestyle and fashion products and returns
50% of profits to charity.
In October 2013 we hosted a successful event with the University of
Toronto and the Rotman School of Management. Dr. Beatrix Dart, was
the speaker for the evening and she discussed ‘Can women truly not have
it all?’
The event took five months to plan and Julia O’Brien spent a significant
amount of time liaising with Dr Dart’s office to co-ordinate the running
order of the event, confirm the topic and send out invitations through the
Canadian network in London.
The event was a huge success, with over 50 guests in attendance. We
encouraged guests to take part in break-out sessions to discuss the
challenges of breaking through the glass ceiling. The event raised the
profile of the CWC with young Canadian professional women in London
and helped to drive an increase in membership.
Our evening networking events typically draw between 15-50 attendees
and the format of the events has been successful.
2. On June 18th
, 2014 the Canadian Women’s Club was delighted to have Dr. Christian Lloyd join us to
share his research on Jimi Hendrix’s life in London in a talk titled ‘Hendrix at Home: Researching the
Private Life of a Superstar and his London'.
Dr. Christian Lloyd is the Academic Director for the Bader International Study
Centre (BISC) at Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, UK. BISC is an international
study program operated by Queen's University (Canada).
The Handel House museum in London has recently begun development of the
Jimi Hendrix museum in this rock legend’s former Mayfair flat, where he lived
in 1968-69. Dr. Lloyd has been commissioned to write a book with Dr. Sheila
Whiteley on Hendrix’s London life for the museum and is interviewing several
of the star’s closest friends and associates as part of this exciting project. Using
this research, his talk painted a picture of life in the Hendrix home.
We had over 30 guests join us on the evening. Many of our guests were CWC
members and Queen’s University alumni living in London.
