MAIN STAGE
2-3:30pm: Arts and Culture
Panel Discussion
Join in a conversation at The Way Station
as we tackle these timely questions and
propose solutions: How can we sustain
an affordable, desirable, culturally diverse
and creatively active neighborhood
with a partnership between the city,
small business, cultural organizations,
creatives and citizens? How can ground
up revitalization efforts build a stronger
neighborhood rather than fragmenting
it? How can art and culture initiatives be
a positive influence on the community?
What would enlightened public policies
look like?
Moderator: Caron Atlas, Director, Arts &
Democracy and Co-Director, NOCD-NY
Panelists: Brooklyn Borough President Eric L.
Adams; Erin S. Daily and Brian Weissman,
Co-Founders, Brooklyn Metal Works; Andy
Heidel, Proprietor The Way Station; Rasu
Jilani, Socially-Engaged Art Curator and
Civic Engagement Professional; Millard

Technical College, a BA in Criminal
Justice from John Jay College of Criminal
Justice; and a Masters’ Degree in Public
Administration from Marist College. In 1984,
Eric graduated from the Police Academy as
the highest-ranked student in his class. He
went on to serve in the NYPD for 22 years,
Politics, and the Cultural Blueprint for New
York City. She is on the district and steering
committees for participatory budgeting in
New York City and was engaged in relief
and recovery work following Hurricane
Sandy. Caron was a Warren Weaver Fellow
at the Rockefeller Foundation and is an
alumni of Coro’s Leadership New York. She
received her BA and MA from the University
of Chicago.
Erin S. Daily and Brian Weissman co-
founded Brooklyn Metal Works in 2011, a
co-working metalsmithing studio, education
lab, and exhibition space. Prior to opening
BKMW Erin and Brian both received
their MFA in Metal from SUNY New Paltz
and taught jewelry and metalsmithing
extensively along the East Coast. They
continue to maintain their studio and art
making practices and their work can be seen
both nationally and internationally. Their
personal endeavors as artists and teachers
is the foundation of Brooklyn Metal Works,
a safe working and learning environment
where they encourage the exploration
and experimentation necessary to further
the field of metalsmithing and to foster a
dynamic conversation with the broader arts
community. Brooklyn Metal Works is located
in Prospect Heights where they also reside.
Andy Heidel is the owner of The Way
Station and a graduate of the University
of Connecticut with a major in English and
minor in Business. He has lived in Park Slope
and Prospect Heights for the past 20 years
and seen the neighborhoods evolve into
what they are today.
Rasu Jilani is an Independent curator, social
sculptor and entrepreneur whose work
investigates the intersection between art,
culture and civic engagement as a means of
raising critical consciousness. The objective
of his work is to catalyze interaction
between artists, the local community and
the wider public, in order to promote
awareness around social issues through
exhibitions, humanities, community programs
and cultural events. Rasu Jilani joined the
staff of MAPP International Productions
in April 2013 as Director of Community
he would ultimately retire having attained
the rank of captain. In 1995, he co-founded
100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care,
an advocacy group for black police officers.
In this role, he often spoke out against police
brutality and racial profiling, unafraid to
challenge One Police Plaza and City Hall.
In 2006, Eric retired from the NYPD to make
a successful run for the New York State
Senate. As the four-term representative of
the 20th State Senatorial District, covering
Borough Park, Crown Heights, Flatbush,
Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Sunset Park
and Windsor Terrace, he worked on issues
including affordable housing, educational
funding and preventative health. He became
a champion on statewide matters such as
good government, workers’ rights, quality
of life concerns and public safety. In his
district, Eric also became known for his efforts
to tackle child abuse, conflict resolution,
parental empowerment and protecting small
businesses. In 2013, Eric was elected by
Brooklynites to be the first African-American
to serve as Brooklyn Borough President. Eric
maintains residences in Bedford-Stuyvesant
and Prospect Heights, where he has resided
for over twenty years.

The Arts” exhibition. Rasu holds a B.S. from
Syracuse University.

raised in a artistically and politically vibrant
family (in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn), and
possessing a diverse artistic background
(classical violin, African drumming, theater),
Mitty has a passion for the intersection of
arts and activism which he explored through
a WK Kellogg Fellowship and which he

Designers who are makers, makers who are
jewelers, artists who are metalsmiths. Meet the
people who create the work that you want
to wear, in the place where the fabrication
happens. Check in on the making process and
take in the finished works on display; featuring
over 17 artists.
JUNE 13 – JULY 31, 12-6PM
In the Gallery: Paper- Plastic- Metal- Stone
Each artist, who currently identifies with one
of the four specified mediums, has created
four works based on the theme paper-plastic-
metal-stone. Here they consider the social
and cultural history of their chosen medium,
and how the material interacts – historically,
culturally and aesthetically – with the other
three materials. This exhibition is part of the
Brooklyn Metal Works guest curator series.
