Career Corner
Today’s job seekers need to be on top
of their game while seeking
employment, changing jobs or seeking
a career change. Each brings into
question one universal thought, what
is your game plan?
A tip to consider is to reach out
directly to hiring managers. While
some may think this is over reaching
and over kill, the question that begs to
be answered, do you want to deal
with someone who has the authority
to say yes, you are hired.
Here are some suggestions on how to
connect directly with hiring managers:
• Go to the company’s website
• Look under staff or leadership tab
and see whom best to connect
with
• Check your LinkedIn profile to see
who you may know is in a hiring
capacity
• Check your second level
connections and ask for an
introduction to department
managers
• Join groups on LinkedIn
Hiring managers are often active
participants in LinkedIn groups. If
there are groups that are aligned with
your industry and interest, join them.
Remember to be professional and
participate often, commenting on
post and articles that you can
contribute to. Leave room for an
open-ended discussion to keep the
dialogue flowing for you to
continuously participate. This will give
insight to you as a professional with
all group participants, including hiring
managers.
Don’t forget follow up is key to
landing. You don’t want to be a pest
with constant phone calls but asking
“when should I follow up with you” is
completely appropriate.
NSHMBA NETWORKING/PROFESSIONAL
DEVELOPMENT EVENT A HUGE SUCCESS…
The NSHMBA Chapter evening of professional Development and
networking year-end event held on November 12, 2015, at Baruch College
with leadership from Coca-Cola, Paychex, and Travelers,
included presentations on Leveraging your personal brand and skills to
achieve career goals. Most of the discussions were practical real life
experiences focused on technology, branding, networking and developing
professional skills to stand out in the existing job market.
Representatives from the companies availed themselves to Q & A from
the audience, which highlighted various challenges facing job seekers
today.
They emphasized the need to remain current on skills in their industry. In
addition, while discussing social media presence, it was unanimously
agreed that LinkedIn profiles are to remain professional. However, it is
equally important to show the “human side” of one self on social media
such as Facebook, but to keep it appropriate. You don’t want to post
anything compromising or embarrassing, as employers search all forms of
social media when viewing candidates.
A special thank you must be extended to our keynote speaker Stuart Jara,
former National Chair of NSHMBA, and Caroline Ceniza-Levine, a Career
and Business expert who moderated the event and our expert
panelist. Their knowledge and expertise lent to the depth and breath of
the event.
Due to the success of this event, participants voiced a desire to have more
events such as this one with a focus on tactical and practical applications
for expanding their network and processes to land safely.
