Headway ADP’s community education team present to high school students who are our next
generation of drivers. Speakers talk about their personal experiences with the aim of preventing
brain injuries from happening to other people and to raise awareness in the general
community. Headway ADP has a powerful panel of guest speakers with ‘real life’ stories
about the impact that acquired brain injury has had on their lives.
Our team continue to increase their profile in the community and have
completed talks at 2 new schools in South West Sydney. The team
continue to present to schools with the support of the U Turn
The Wheel program run by the Rotary Club of Camden.
The feedback has been very positive. 100% of students state
they now have a better understanding of ABI and the risks
of dangerous driving and risk taking behaviour.
For more information on how to make a
booking for your/childs school or
organisation contact the office or

In the 70’s I lived and worked in the Wollongong
area I wanted to go back there and see the
changes and developments that have occurred.
As part of my IAP goals my CAW supported me
to plan a day trip. On Monday 18th May I was
picked up from home and had the opportunity to
visit Port Kembla and surrounding suburbs. I
was amazed at how different everything looked.
There were now high rise buildings, new
shopping centres and the CDB of Wollongong
looked completely different from what I
remembered. We spent some time at Port
Kembla Beach which is still as beautiful and
peaceful as I remembered.
Port Kembla is a suburb of Wollongong and first
sighted by Captain James Cook in 1770. The
name Kembla is Aboriginal meaning plenty
wildfowl.
Port Kembla is situated directly
below Mount Kembla.
In 1908 a new copper smelter and refinery began
production and in 1917 Metal Manufactures opened
and in 1927 the Hoskins Iron and Steel Works which
became Australian Iron and Steel in 1928.
In the 1950’s and 1960’s migrants from the UK, Italy,
Macedonia and Germany came to live and work. Port
Kembla is still one of the most culturally diverse
suburbs in NSW.
Port Kembla is known for the BlueScope Steel
Steelworks, Port Kembla Coal Terminal and Port
Kembla Copper. Port Kembla Harbour is an export
location for coal mined in the southern and western
regions of NSW.

CARERS CORNER -’CARE FOR ME APP’
EDNESDAY BOWLING BUDDIES
ARER PAGE
Every Wednesday we both look forward to coming in to Headway for
bowling group. “I get up and get ready, walk to the bus stop, catch the bus
and come into Headway. It’s great when I get here, I have a drink, catch
up with my friends and we play Uno” Lee.
“I get up and get ready to catch the taxi to Headway and I know it will be
enjoyable. I greet everybody, have a 2SM play cards and tell some jokes”
Michael.
We travel to Villawood AMF for a friendly game of ten pin bowling.
We cheer and support each other and have a fun game. Headway bowling
group is not just about getting the highest score, it’s more about being out
in the community, feeling independent and part of the world. After the
game we travel back to Headway and have lunch. We talk about our day
and what we enjoyed most. Even though we have a disability we can still
join in and have some fun.
Story by Lee.C and Michael.R
The developer of the ‘Care for Me’ app is a full time carer of a child
with cerebral palsy. As her child’s needs became more complex and
challenging she struggled to find a simple and reliable tool to record
her child’s care needs. She took matters into her own hands and
developed a tool for herself and other carers in similar situations.
The app ensures a person’s individual support plan and preferences
are portable and up to date. It allows for all your loved one’s needs
to be recorded within specific care categories to provide clear and
easily accessible instructions. Features of the app include a
calendar, a personal profile where you can add and record contacts
and specific medications, social needs including communication,
behaviours, recreation and more, as well as physical need including
movement , sleeping , eating and drinking.
You can visit www.careappsaustralia.com.au to find out more.

.P’S C OFFEE REVIEW
I first met with Fiona and Kath from Headway
ADP from Bankstown eight and a half years ago. I
was very nervous and scared.
I started going to Headway ADP and mixing with
other participants and I will say it was very scary. I
had become a home person not wanting to get out
much and found my home a safe place to be.
I started going to the classes that are held at Head-
way ADP and learning to be involved with other
participants. I tried to relearn new skills to teach
me how to live my life with an Acquired Brain Inju-
ry. I will say it was very scary we had to learn how
to communicate with each other also.
The participants have a CAW to help us to set goals
and help us all to reach our goals so that we can
move forward in our life. Each participant has dif-
ferent types of goals to achieve so the staff find the
best information to help everyone.
Every participant who starts at Headway ADP
comes in with the same feelings as I have and each
participant has a different type of Brain Injury so
HANGES WITH HEADWAY ADP
we all have to learn new skills to be able to move
forward in our life.
The one thing that we now all have in common is
that over the years we have all become very good
friends. I have spoken to some other participants
and they all have the same feeling about Headway
ADP as I have had. Ari, Lee, Peter, John, Phong,
Michael and the other participants as well as myself
have talked about what it was like when we first
started at Headway ADP and the changes in all of
us. We now have a Family and it is always a great
pleasure to go to classes and to see the smiles on
Fiona and all the staff.
The participants have a great feeling of pride when
we go to Headway ADP for classes or just to see the
CAW and the look on their faces when they see each
other is a feeling you want to keep forever.
So from the Participant’s we would like to say a
special “Thank you” to Fiona and the Staff for
making our lives so much better than when we first
joined Headway ADP at Bankstown.
My Coffee Trip was to Viggalio, (Shop 11/25 Selmes Parade). Parking was easy, we parked behind the
restaurant. The café atmosphere was great. There were outdoor and indoor areas and we sat outside. The
music playing was entertaining and it was great being outdoors. Inside is warm but
with lots of space but it was a little louder. I ordered a sticky date pudding with
toffee and ice-cream and a small cappuccino. The pudding was unbelievable and
very filling, it was delicious. The ice-cream was perfect with the cake. I thought it
was a little more expensive than other cafes, but worth it and I would go back to eat
there. The one thing I didn’t like was the loud noises from other diners and the
music. It can be a steep climb into and out of the café for some people. You also have
to be careful in the carpark as there is no crossing. I give it …….

After the game we travel back to Headway and have lunch. We talk about our day and what we enjoyed most. Even though we have a disability we can still join in and have some fun. Story by Lee.C and Michael.R The developer of the ‘Care for Me’ app is a full time carer of a child with cerebral palsy. As her child’s needs became more complex and challenging she struggled to find a simple and reliable tool to record her child’s care needs. She took matters into her own hands and developed a tool for herself and other carers in similar situations. The app ensures a person’s individual support plan and preferences are portable and up to date. It allows for all your loved one’s needs to be recorded within specific care categories to provide clear and easily accessible instructions. Features of the app include a calendar, a personal profile where you can add and record contacts and specific medications, social needs including communication, behaviours, recreation and more, as well as physical need including movement , sleeping , eating and drinking. • 6. Headlines—JULY 2015 6 BOB .P’S C OFFEE REVIEW I first met with Fiona and Kath from Headway ADP from Bankstown eight and a half years ago. I was very nervous and scared. I started going to Headway ADP and mixing with other participants and I will say it was very scary. I had become a home person not wanting to get out much and found my home a safe place to be. I started going to the classes that are held at Head- way ADP and learning to be involved with other participants. I tried to relearn new skills to teach me how to live my life with an Acquired Brain Inju- ry. I will say it was very scary we had to learn how to communicate with each other also. The participants have a CAW to help us to set goals and help us all to reach our goals so that we can move forward in our life. Each participant has dif- ferent types of goals to achieve so the staff find the best information to help everyone. Every participant who starts at Headway ADP comes in with the same feelings as I have and each participant has a different type of Brain Injury so HANGES WITH HEADWAY ADP we all have to learn new skills to be able to move forward in our life. The one thing that we now all have in common is that over the years we have all become very good friends. I have spoken to some other participants and they all have the same feeling about Headway ADP as I have had. Ari, Lee, Peter, John, Phong, Michael and the other participants as well as myself have talked about what it was like when we first started at Headway ADP and the changes in all of us. We now have a Family and it is always a great pleasure to go to classes and to see the smiles on Fiona and all the staff. The participants have a great feeling of pride when we go to Headway ADP for classes or just to see the CAW and the look on their faces when they see each other is a feeling you want to keep forever. So from the Participant’s we would like to say a special “Thank you” to Fiona and the Staff for making our lives so much better than when we first joined Headway ADP at Bankstown. My Coffee Trip was to Viggalio, (Shop 11/25 Selmes Parade). Parking was easy, we parked behind the restaurant. The café atmosphere was great. There were outdoor and indoor areas and we sat outside. The music playing was entertaining and it was great being outdoors. Inside is warm but with lots of space but it was a little louder. I ordered a sticky date pudding with toffee and ice-cream and a small cappuccino. The pudding was unbelievable and very filling, it was delicious. The ice-cream was perfect with the cake. I thought it was a little more expensive than other cafes, but worth it and I would go back to eat there. The one thing I didn’t like was the loud noises from other diners and the music. It can be a steep climb into and out of the café for some people. You also have to be careful in the carpark as there is no crossing. I give it …….
