This present work is based on secondary method of research, some personal observation and recommendations are made in this regard, the objective of study is to understand the trend of domestic violence in Southeast Asia as well as in Tripura, and to know the causes and impact and also to provide suggestive measures.
Domestic violence in Southeast Asia- a special reference to Tripura

2. Domestic Violence is an act committed to keep under control
women with the intention of hurting or humiliating;
World Health Organization (WHO) has defined domestic
violence as "the range of sexually, psychologically and physically
coercive acts used against adult and adolescent women by current
or former male intimate partners” ;
Lack of knowledge of existing laws, lack of proper laws
implementation and absence of proper safeguards can be
considered as the main causes;
Women in Southeast Asia are subjected to domestic violence due
to the social, cultural and economic structure.

in Southeast Asia, especially in
Tripura
To study the causes and impact
of this violence
To provide suggestions for
prevention of domestic violence
against Women
4. This present work is primarily based on
secondary method of research and the sources
are collected from various journals, books,
internet etc. Hence, the analysis hereinafter
made in this presentation is based on the
collected information. However, some
personal observation and recommendations
are included in this regard.
6. There is 37.7% prevalence of DV in Southeast Asia based on
aggregated data from Bangladesh, East Timor, India,
Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand
68% of women in India suffers from domestic violence
According to a survey in 2006 by the Ministry of Child
Development and Women’s empowerment more than 60% of
women in Sri Lanka are the victims of DV
70% of women of Bhutan said they are the victim of DV
Thomas Reuters Foundation survey shows around 90% of the
women of Pakistan face domestic violence
7. 35% of all women will experience either intimate
partner or non-partner violence
Study found that globally 38% of all women who
were murdered by their intimate partners
42% of women had experienced injuries as a result
of such violence
40% of Southeast Asian women of age 15 and
above experience domestic violence

8. As according to the report of Tripura Commission for
women(TCW) :-
• Over 135 complaints of domestic violence till December 2015;
• 42 cases alone were of divorce in that number;
• 69 cases of dowry harassment with 11 dowry death recorded during that period.
Recently in Alternative Dispute Redressal Centre it was said by
former Justice Dipak Kumar Gupta that
• Tripura is in the top with the highest no. of DV in India.
11. The failure to punish can result from poor laws, poor
administration, expensive legal systems, inaccessible legal
systems, corruption as well as women's fear of reporting
They often end up experiencing poverty, isolation and
psychological disability
In most of the cases they face pressure from the parents
and society
12. • Break silence to stop violence
• Preventive and curative measures
• Activists, help lines, counseling should be encouraged
• School curriculum which includes gender norms should be revised and
include human rights and equality
• Awareness programs, educating men and women
• Social media should be used with digital sensitive message
