2. • Layout and Design – The double page spread is laid out in a open lay out and is picture led as it is primarily
a photo diary of a trip to Cuba. There is one column of text in the double page spread it is neatly organised and
blended in next to the main image.
• Images Used – The images used in the double page spread are quirky and unconventional magazine pictures,
at the same time they are beautiful pieces of photography. All the images are of unconventional things which we
would not expect to see in England, but are apparently the norm in Cuba. The images show that Cuba is out of
time, out of tune, and out of step with the modern world. The main image is one of a flamingo with a broken neck,
the caption says that it’s a good metaphor for the country as a whole. One of the other images is one of a woman
in a bowling alley with a bowling ball, however she is not wearing shoes and is instead barefoot, which is a small
example of the differences between Cuba and the modern world. Another picture is one of a farmer gazing at a
controlled burn of his fields that got way out of hand as the dry crops exploded in a massive cloud of smoke. The
next image is one of pieces of communication being covered up by plastic sheets, this is showing how Cuba’s
communication devices have always been extremely limited, the caption tells us that it was only two years ago
that the government set up an internet infrastructure and allowed people to go online. The final image is one of a
man wearing a tuxedo and looking as if he is off The Godfather, this is because the author says that Cubans are
still nostalgic for an era when American movie stars and gangsters gallivanted through the streets of Havana, the
capital city of Cuba.
• Headline – The headline reads Castroland presumably after former political leader Fidel Castro. The headline
is in a Times New Roman black font which makes the article look smart and neat. The headline is also placed in
the top left hand corner of the page and is a much bigger font than anything else on the page to make it stand out
more.
• Pull Quote – They do not use a pull quote as it would take more away from the images which is the main
purpose of the article.
• VALS – The VALS of the readership is for a magazine which breaks away from the usual commercial look on
the world, they would probably be interested in photography as there are a lot of unique images used throughout
the magazine. It is also quite an arty magazine as well this is shown through the photography. Readers may also
have a interest in fashion and music as they are both featured in the magazine, as most of the adverts in the
magazine are for fashion clothing and there are a few articles on bands and new bands.
