CariCOOS operates two high performance computing facilities that perform data management, communications, and computationally intensive modeling. These facilities run operational ocean and atmospheric models like ROMS, SWAN, and WRF to produce forecasts and reprocess historical data. CariCOOS also utilizes observational data from assets like satellites, buoys, radar, and meteostations. All observational and modeling data is made available to users through the CariCOOS data management system and is divided into observational and modeling data products. The facilities have backup power and cooling to ensure business continuity of operations.

OVERVIEW
ASSETS
• Internet Service Providers (ISP) like AT&T are the back bone of data gathering and transmission, from and to all
assets and required servers.
• Observational assets provide historical data to be used as input and model validation.
• Models and forecasts include but are not limited to: wind, waves and currents. Operational models have resources
priority over experimental versions. Experimental models run in sandbox environments.

CariCOOS dual High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities at Isla Magueyes and UPRM perform the bulk of our
Data Management and Communications (DMAC) activities and computationally intensive modeling. The Weather
Research Forecast (WRF), ocean circulation model ROMS, Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN), ADCIRC-SWAN
coastal inundation, Bouss2D, and many others, are all run in-house. SWAN, ROMS and WRF are executed in
operational mode while others are used in a process-oriented fashion. The Navy’s AMSEAS model output is also
widely utilized. Our observational and modeling data is a reinterpretable representation of information in a formalized
manner suitable for communication, interpretation, and processing. For this purpose CariCOOS divides its products
in two sections, observational assets and modeling assets, which are available for any users, scientific and leisure
alike.
