To gather information
about his or her academic
history and current
challenges to determine
if cognitive and/or
achievement testing
is appropriate. The
student is given an
intake information
booklet to complete.
If it’s determine that
assessment is appropriate
student will need to
enroll in EDEV 24 class.
LD
Screening
LD
Intake
To gather background information and learn about any other issues
(physical, visual, hearing, or psychological that may be the primary
reason for the disability. The LD Specialist reviews the student’s
responses regarding his/her developmental history, family history,
work history, health information, educational information, and cultural
linguistic information provided in the intake & eligibility record booklet
that is completed by the student .
Cognitive
Testing
The student is
administered a series of
tests measuring some of
the following cognitive
abilities: verbal, verbal
comprehension, thinking,
comprehension -
knowledge, auditory
processing, perceptual
reasoning, visual - spatial
thinking, fluid reasoning,
working memory, short
term memory, long term
retrieval, processing
speed, and/or cognitive
efficiency.
The student must
demonstrate average to
above average
intelligence. Average
intelligence is how 50%
of individuals your age
perform on the tests
given.
Achievement
Testing
The student is administered a series of tests to measure his/her academic strengths and
weaknesses in the areas of math, reading and writing. The student must demonstrate
average achievement in at least one academic area in order to rule out insufficient
educational preparation or ESL issues as the primary cause for the learning
challenges.
Processing
Deficit
Results from the
cognitive assessment
determines if the student
has a processing deficit.
A processing deficit is when
your brain has difficulty
with the way it process
visual and or auditory
information.
Aptitude vs. Achievement
After all assessments have been completed, results are
compared to identify if there is a significant difference
between his/her ability to learn and what s/he has been able to
learn.
Feedback
Test results are shared with
the student. If the student
meets the criteria in steps
3-6, then the student is
eligible to receive services
under the category of
learning disabled. The
LD Specialist will review
the appropriate accommodations and strategies
to maximize the student’s individual
learning style.
