NYU Langone Health’s Epic Elevate Provider Optimization Program was designed to help providers develop and refine
advanced skills to improve proficiency within the Epic EHR. Our combined educational programs have reached more than
700 NYULH providers over the past year and include: Lunch and Learn Video Webinars, in-person clinical site visits to both
inpatient and ambulatory locations, provider personalization labs, and 2.5 hour Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits
granting Advanced Epic Skills Class that incorporates Health System Science (HSS) concepts that support advanced EHR
skill development.
The HSS content taught as part of the
current class include the Pareto Principle
(also known as the 80/20 rule) and a
modified version of Ferlie and Shortel
framework for systems thinking in
healthcare improvement. Advanced EHR
skills covered include: creation of in-basket
shortcuts, customizing the workspace for
efficient navigation, order favorites and
order panel creation, and utilizing smart
tools for documentation efficiency.
As of February 2020, 21 two and a half
hour sessions were held with 60 providers
participating and 44 providers completing
the post class survey. 100% of participants
were satisfied with the class and 90% of
providers rated the class 5/5, extremely
satisfied. Though further study is needed
to understand the impact of this curriculum
on physician performance, experience,
and patient outcomes, early feedback
suggests high levels of provider
satisfaction with this class that
incorporates HSS with EHR skills
education.
We would like to thank the NYULH MCIT Training Team for their partnership
in developing and delivering this curriculum. For more information about
