Needs and Wants Lesson
Lesson Objective:
By the end of the lesson, pupils will understand the difference between a need and a want
and the importance of making the right choices between the two in order to effectively manage
their money.
Outcomes:
When considering how to spend my money, I can source, compare and contrast different
contracts and services, discuss their advantages and disadvantages, and explain which offer
best value to me.
Lesson Introduction
We all like to spend money and we all have a list of things that we would like to buy - but are the
things on our lists Needs or Wants ? In other words, are they things that we need to survive or
just things that we would like to own ?
Humans have 5 basic needs that they need to pay for in order to survive :- these are food, drink,
shelter, warmth and first aid. Together with oxygen, we are able to stay alive with these items, but
without any of them we would eventually die. Anything else would be classed as a want, something
which is a luxury that we would like to own but without it we would be able to survive. Wants are
quite often upgraded versions of things, think of how many versions of iPhone we have had.
Through glossy advertising we are made to believe that it is better than the last version and that
we really NEED to buy one. But you don't really - after all you won't die without it !
To make things more complicated just because something appears to be a need doesn't means that it
is ! For example, a takeaway pizza is food but is not a need because it is a luxury item and cheaper
healthier food items are available. You might think that you need the latest pair of NIKE trainers -
however you wouldn't die without them, as you can always wear cheaper, alternative footwear.
As you get older, you will have a restricted amount of money to spend each month and you'll have to
choose between spending money on needs or wants - some of the decisions might be quite difficult.
Think about how you would feel if your last $30 in your bank account had to be spent on petrol for
your car just so that you could get to work rather than that night going out with friends, which you
had been looking forward to.
Discussion
Once the introduction has been completed with the class, the attached discussion notes sheet will
assist you in building the pupils' awareness of the differences between NEEDS & WANTS.
Worksheet - Pupil Activity
Through the discussion it should be ascertained that the pupils understand the differences between
need and want items and the process that surrounds making the correct choices between the two.
Pupils then can progress to a worked example. The questions are set around a scenario using real
life monetary amounts.
Plenary
This sheet summarises the learning and highlights the key points of the NEEDS & WANTS lesson.

Discussion Notes
Needs and Wants
Q1: How do you decide
whether something is
a NEED or a WANT ?
A: Put simply, a NEED is something we could actually die
without. Our basic needs are the following 5 things :- food,
drink, shelter, first aid and warmth. A want is something that
we would like to make our life more pleasant and convenient.
Q2: There are 5 basic
NEEDS that we
all have.
Can you give
an example
of each ?
A: This answer is very personal to the individual however it
should include, a piece of food, a drink, something to keep
you warm, something you would use when you are ill and a
form of shelter. It should also be appropriate to the age
and lifestyle of the pupil and be a basic item ....
e.g. takeaway pizza would not be appropriate.
Q3: There are a few additional
items which may be regarded as
NEEDS in certain circumstances.
When would this be the case ?
Q4: Give an example of one of
these items which might
sometimes change from
being a WANT to being a
NEED, and explain why it
has become a NEED.
A: Cars could be a need if someone uses it for work :-
maybe they live in the countryside with no public
transport and have to travel to town for work.
Laptops may be a need for self employed graphic
designers as they require them to do their job and
work for themselves.
Similar answers can be accepted.
Supplementary Questions
Q6: Do you think your wants would be different if you lived in poverty in a third world country ?
Yes - in poverty, people don't even have the basic needs that we have, such as a clean water supply
to drink from or clothes to wear. These items are their wants because they have so little.
Q7: Being sensible with your money - what things should you consider before buying a WANT item ?
Answers should contain some of the following points :- can I afford this ?, have I paid for all my
needs before I buy this ?, what purpose does this new item have ?, is it good value for money ?,
is there something more important that I should be using my money for ?, do I have something
which is similar/has the same purpose ?, how is this item better than what I already have ? etc.
A: Items which could have an indirect impact on
our survival. Items which if we didn't have would
mean that we may not be able to afford the basic
needs such as food or paying our rent. These items
would only be needs when no alternative options
exist and most of these items relate to items required
for employment.
Q5: What might happen if
you spend all your money on
WANTS rather than NEEDS ?
A: You would get into financial difficulties as there
would be no money left to pay for important bills
such as rent and electricity. You could lose your
home if you didn't pay the rent. Wants usually
become outdated quickly and would drop in value.
As they would be worth very little money you
would be unable to sell them to raise money.

Questions to Assess Student Understanding
Dan discovered that he couldn't have the car that he wanted.
Why can we not always get what we want ?
• We don't always have the money to be able to afford it.
• The item might not meet our real NEEDS.
• We might have to use our money for something else - make the right choice.
• We may have to consider what someone else needs or wants from the item.
How does wealth impact on the choices we make regards our NEEDS ?
• With more money we make more elaborate choices - buy want version of needs eg caviar for breakfast.
• We use NEEDS as a status symbol of how much money we have - mansion.
• Do not have to worry about our NEEDS they will be taken care of.
• Do not have to shop around for the cheapest version of our NEED items.
When purchasing WANT items, what other things might people believe they are also purchasing
at the same time ?
• To fit in - Acceptance from friends and peers.
• A type of lifestyle - celebrities have similar items.
• The impression of wealth.
• Happiness - owning the item will make the person happy.
Summary/Plenary SheetSummary/Plenary Sheet
As humans we all have needs and wants, and it is important to understand the
differences between them especially when working within a restricted financial
budget. Often we are forced to make choices between needs and wants based on
what we can afford and to demonstrate good money management.
Recap on Key Learning Points
• The 5 basic NEEDS that we have are food, drink, shelter, warmth and first aid.
• WANTS are usually luxury items which are associated with a certain status and lifestyle.
• Good money management relies on us being able to pay for our NEEDS before spending on WANTS.
Extended Learning
For teache /parentsrs wishing to further the lesson by issuing homework or extended learning opportunities
to pupils the following are suggested activities :-
• Review magazines to look for adverts which are selling why you NEED an item.
• Ask pupils to list and discuss the needs of a person who has lost their home and possessions in a flood.
• Give the pupils a selection of items, then tell them that they have been shipwrecked and have to
choose 5 items from the selection from the sinking ship to aid their survival.
Ask them to choose and discuss reasons for the selection.

Copyright © Pamela Fraser & TeeJay Publishers August 2013 Needs & Wants Level 3 Guidance Notes for Teachers Needs and Wants Lesson Lesson Objective: By the end of the lesson, pupils will understand the difference between a need and a want and the importance of making the right choices between the two in order to effectively manage their money. Outcomes: When considering how to spend my money, I can source, compare and contrast different contracts and services, discuss their advantages and disadvantages, and explain which offer best value to me. Lesson Introduction We all like to spend money and we all have a list of things that we would like to buy - but are the things on our lists Needs or Wants ? In other words, are they things that we need to survive or just things that we would like to own ? Humans have 5 basic needs that they need to pay for in order to survive :- these are food, drink, shelter, warmth and first aid. Together with oxygen, we are able to stay alive with these items, but without any of them we would eventually die. Anything else would be classed as a want, something which is a luxury that we would like to own but without it we would be able to survive. Wants are quite often upgraded versions of things, think of how many versions of iPhone we have had. Through glossy advertising we are made to believe that it is better than the last version and that we really NEED to buy one. But you don't really - after all you won't die without it ! To make things more complicated just because something appears to be a need doesn't means that it is ! For example, a takeaway pizza is food but is not a need because it is a luxury item and cheaper healthier food items are available. You might think that you need the latest pair of NIKE trainers - however you wouldn't die without them, as you can always wear cheaper, alternative footwear. As you get older, you will have a restricted amount of money to spend each month and you'll have to choose between spending money on needs or wants - some of the decisions might be quite difficult. Think about how you would feel if your last $30 in your bank account had to be spent on petrol for your car just so that you could get to work rather than that night going out with friends, which you had been looking forward to. Discussion Once the introduction has been completed with the class, the attached discussion notes sheet will assist you in building the pupils' awareness of the differences between NEEDS & WANTS. Worksheet - Pupil Activity Through the discussion it should be ascertained that the pupils understand the differences between need and want items and the process that surrounds making the correct choices between the two. Pupils then can progress to a worked example. The questions are set around a scenario using real life monetary amounts. Plenary This sheet summarises the learning and highlights the key points of the NEEDS & WANTS lesson.
  • 3. Copyright © Pamela Fraser & TeeJay Publishers August 2013 Needs & Wants Level 3 Discussion Notes Needs and Wants Q1: How do you decide whether something is a NEED or a WANT ? A: Put simply, a NEED is something we could actually die without. Our basic needs are the following 5 things :- food, drink, shelter, first aid and warmth. A want is something that we would like to make our life more pleasant and convenient. Q2: There are 5 basic NEEDS that we all have. Can you give an example of each ? A: This answer is very personal to the individual however it should include, a piece of food, a drink, something to keep you warm, something you would use when you are ill and a form of shelter. It should also be appropriate to the age and lifestyle of the pupil and be a basic item .... e.g. takeaway pizza would not be appropriate. Q3: There are a few additional items which may be regarded as NEEDS in certain circumstances. When would this be the case ? Q4: Give an example of one of these items which might sometimes change from being a WANT to being a NEED, and explain why it has become a NEED. A: Cars could be a need if someone uses it for work :- maybe they live in the countryside with no public transport and have to travel to town for work. Laptops may be a need for self employed graphic designers as they require them to do their job and work for themselves. Similar answers can be accepted. Supplementary Questions Q6: Do you think your wants would be different if you lived in poverty in a third world country ? Yes - in poverty, people don't even have the basic needs that we have, such as a clean water supply to drink from or clothes to wear. These items are their wants because they have so little. Q7: Being sensible with your money - what things should you consider before buying a WANT item ? Answers should contain some of the following points :- can I afford this ?, have I paid for all my needs before I buy this ?, what purpose does this new item have ?, is it good value for money ?, is there something more important that I should be using my money for ?, do I have something which is similar/has the same purpose ?, how is this item better than what I already have ? etc. A: Items which could have an indirect impact on our survival. Items which if we didn't have would mean that we may not be able to afford the basic needs such as food or paying our rent. These items would only be needs when no alternative options exist and most of these items relate to items required for employment. Q5: What might happen if you spend all your money on WANTS rather than NEEDS ? A: You would get into financial difficulties as there would be no money left to pay for important bills such as rent and electricity. You could lose your home if you didn't pay the rent. Wants usually become outdated quickly and would drop in value. As they would be worth very little money you would be unable to sell them to raise money.
