How to Effectively Manage Remote Workers
If you’ve decided to join the growing number of business owners and managers who are
allowing their employees to telecommute on at least a part-time basis, it’s vital that you give
some serious consideration to how best to manage those workers when they’re not in an
office down the hallway. Although it’s definitely necessary to make sure that your remote
workers are spending their time in productive, business-related activities, it’s also important
not to micro-manage. As you send your employees off to work outside the office, follow these
tips to make certain that you continue to be an effective manager for your remote workers:
 Let your employees know that you trust them. Tell your workers that the reason they’re
being given this opportunity to work outside of the office in the first place is because
you trust them to be productive and do the best job possible no matter where they’re
physically located. When your employees know you have faith in them, they’re more
likely to live up to your expectations.
 Include your telecommuting employees in regular meetings. Whether your workers
come into the office for meetings or attend meetings remotely via the Internet, it’s
important to make your remote workers feel that they’re still part of the team.
 Consider using remote monitoring software on your telecommuters’ computers to
measure their productivity. Just be sure that you’re honest about your use of the
software with your employees, and choose remote monitoring software that focuses on
measuring how much time your workers are engaged in productive activity rather than
simply using “spyware” to view which websites they’re visiting.
 Recognize a job well done when you write your employee evaluation. It goes without
saying that any good manager should take the time to recognize workers’
accomplishments on a regular basis. But it’s particularly important to include details of
that performance when it comes time to complete an employee evaluation. Remember
that it really is an impressive accomplishment for a worker to be an excellent employee
when he or she is working remotely – it shows maturity, discipline and loyalty to the
employer, not to mention a true desire to do the best job possible.
In order to be an effective manager to your remote workers, it really just requires the same
management skill set you use for your in-office employees. But because your telecommuters
are away from the office and working more or less “on their own,” it’s crucial that you take a
little extra time to include them meetings, decision-making discussions and interactions that
other “regular” employees engage in day to day. Making your remote workers feel that they’re
still part of the team, while at the same time giving them credit for being independent workers,
will foster their loyalty to the company and continued high levels of productivity.
