E. Simms Campbell was the first syndicated African-American cartoonist
and later one of the highest-paid illustrators in the country, but few of his
works reflect his identity as a black man. A rare exception is A Night-Club Map
of Harlem (1932), a pen-and-ink guide to the speakeasies, clubs, and characters
that defined Prohibition-era life on 125th Street. —john bolen

In Seinfeld, Jerry’s living room features a poster of a black 911 Turbo
getting serious air. He’s a “Porschephile” in real life, too, and this month
he’s bringing three of his 47 Porsches under the gavel at the Amelia Island
Car Auction, off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida. Highlighting the sale is
this 550 Spyder from 1955, the same model that James Dean was driving
when he fatally crashed.

CHANEL BROOCH

Deborah Cavendish, the Duchess of
Devonshire, was long overshadowed
by her five older sisters, including
novelists Nancy and Jessica Mitford.
But the duchess, who died in 2014,
at 94, was a woman of taste as well—
painted by Lucian Freud, photographed
by Cecil Beaton, and often bedecked in
dazzling jewelry, including this 2012
“Camélia” brooch by Chanel.
