Perhaps because of the newfound
abundance of gold in California—or
perhaps for the convenience of buying
3¢ postage stamps—the U.S. Bureau of
the Mint introduced the $3 gold coin in
1854. Designed by Mint Chief Engraver
James B. Longacre, the coin depicts Lady
Liberty in a Native American headdress
on the obverse; the reverse shows a wreath
of tobacco, wheat, cotton, and corn.

Neo-Expressionist graffiti prodigy Jean-Michel
Basquiat created this acrylic, oilstick, and xerox
collage, which measures more than six-and-a-half-
feet wide, a year before his death, at 27.

Six days after the
assassination of President
Abraham Lincoln, the
Department of War—
headed by Edwin Stanton—
circulated “America’s Most
Famous Reward Poster,”
calling for the capture and
arrest of John Wilkes Booth
and co-conspirators David
C. Herold and John H.
Surrat. Less than a week
after the poster’s printing,
Herold surrendered, and
Booth was fatally shot.
Surrat—whose mother,
Mary, was hanged as a
conspirator—fled abroad
but was brought to trial in
Maryland in 1867. Charges
were eventually dropped.
