Spotlight on Joseph Massimino
Joseph Massimino is a Technical Fellow (TF) in the Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) Puget
Sound Core System Engineering Organization in Kent, Washington. Joe is the technical lead of the
enterprise-wide Systems Engineering Best Practice initiative. His interests cover process improvement,
engineering tool development and application, and independent assessment. Currently Joe is on special
assignment with the tanker pre-implementation effort.
Earlier this year he developed and delivered Systems Engineering Overview, a course for the Ed Wells
Partnership. The course was broadcast via the Boeing Education Network (BEN) on January 12, 2010. He
has developed and instructed classes in the Systems Engineering Leadership Program. He has also
provided key information at the Systems Engineering Best Practice Web site.
Joe actively sought out technical roles and became a TF after being selected by the government to attend the Systems
Engineering class at Defense Systems Management College. Program assignments provided opportunities to work problems
across the aerospace industry. He received recognition letters from Northrop, Lockheed, and Raytheon and participated on red
teams at Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky. He was a member of a System Root Cause Analysis Task Force for the National Defense
Industrial Association (NDIA).
As a TF, Joe enjoys mentoring and coaching. He says he feels a great sense of satisfaction when opportunities arise to share
lessons learned with program leaders and know that the information provided may avert significant problems later in the program
life cycle. He values the opportunity to work with and get to know “some really amazing people” across The Boeing Company.
Joe has worked on both the commercial and the defense sides of the business at Boeing. He started as a project engineer
conducting aerodynamic wind tunnel testing for 757 and 767 development efforts at the Plant II Aerodynamic Test Facility in
Seattle, Washington. He has supported programs including C-14, Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM), B-52, B-2, F-22, Joint
Advanced Strike Technology (JAST), X-32, Joint Strike Fighter (JSF), Future Combat Systems (FCS), Airborne Warning and
Control System (AWACS), Connections, and P-8A. While working on the F-22 System Test and Weapons System teams he
provided technical consultation on several programs including Heliwing, Comanche, and New Wind Tunnel (NWT). He led a
special assignment for Boeing process changes for government acquisition.
After Joe was recruited by the BDS Systems Engineering Function to participate in development of a Boeing Systems Engineering
Best Practice assessment model, he joined the BDS core organization. He led and participated in program assessments including
H-47, V-22, F-15, F-18, Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS), C-17, B-1, AEW&C, A160, SBInet, FCS, International
Tanker/Transport Airplane (ITTA), B-52 CONECT, and Airborne Laser (ABL). He participated on the Puget Sound Capability
Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Appraisal team and led an assessment of the 787-9 program.
Joe grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, where he worked in a family-owned restaurant. He earned a degree in aerospace
engineering from Boston University.
Outside of work he enjoys spending time with family, teaching, coaching, helping neighbors, and working on home projects. He is
a sports fan and a music enthusiast.
