This document summarizes an interview with Aoife McKeown, a sound technician who discussed her career path and experience working in theater production. She studied media in college and now works as a light and sound technician. While the job can be fun for those with autism or ADHD due to manipulating colors, the wages are inconsistent since there is not always a show every day. She has two other jobs to support herself financially due to the unreliable income from her technician work. The interview provided honest insight into both the rewards and challenges of working in the media field.

Sound technician – living staircase
Aoife McKeown
Aoife was a student at Sunderland college and has studied A – level media. Aoife is now working
in theatre production and is a technician for light and sound. She also did film and media at
university and now is in love with theatre.
I learned, in the living staircase, what’s its like to be a technician and if you have autism or ADHD,
apparently she says ‘you get to mess about with colours’ so it can be really fun. She also
mentioned how you wont struggle to find work because the technician community is so small, you
are guaranteed events when there are on.
With that though we also learned about the inconsistent wages with the job. Since there isn’t a
show on every day or sometimes not for a couple of days you are left open with nothing and she
mentioned how it’s dangerous its good income but its not consistent enough for her to rely on she
also mentioned how she has two other job’s to fund her life and get by. It is nice to hear the
honesty of the media world how sometimes it can be great but in reality it can hard to rely on
since Aoife mentioned how it’s not guaranteed one every day or so.
It was great to hear from her and her experience being a student and doing A – levels to becoming
a technician. Overall this was very helpful to hear the honesty made me really interested to see
these venues and why there isn’t one every day.
