Some time ago, Google introduced nofollow tag. If this tag is used, search engines ignore the link

Example: A link without nofollow tag (sometimes called dofollow link, even though nothing like
dofollow tag exists) looks like this: <a href="http://www.your-domain.com">Anchor text</a>. Such link
will help your website to rank better in Google. However, nofollow link like this: <a
href="http://www.your-domain.com" ref="nofollow">Anchor text</a> will not help.
There are two ways how to find out if the link is nofollow:
• Click the right mouse button, choose "display source code" from the menu and search for nofollow
tags using CTRL + F.
• Use some firefox extension like Search Status which can highlight nofollow links without the need to
check out the source code.

If the content of referring page is related to your website content, the value of such backlink is higher.
Many SEO experts say it is better to get a link from related website with decent pagerank than link
from unrelated website with high pagerank.
