Yehoshua sent meraglim to Ai to see how it was there, but there were not a
lot of people there. The spies came back and said there weren’t many people
there so they didn’t have to send a lot of soldiers.

Yehoshua thought that the battle would be easy, so he sent 3000 soldiers
to fight, but the people of Ai attacked them and they lost 36 soldiers.

B’nei Yisrael wondered why they had lost the battle. Hashem told Yehoshua
that some items had been taken from Yericho, when they were told not to.

Yehoshua had a brilliant plan. He sent 30,000 soldiers to wait in Ai.
While they were waiting he brought a small army started attacking.
