The Andover Way: A Culture of Learning, Teaching and Leading

1. Supporting schools to develop the daily habits needed to create intentionally diverse learning
communities that equitably serve all students
Our Vision… America will be a better place when all families can choose intentionally diverse
and equitable schools, where a racially and socioeconomically diverse group of students and
adults are equipped to thrive academically, are affirmed in their identities and cultural heritage,
and grow committed to one another’s well-being and to building a more just nation, where all
people can make purpose-driven choices about their lives.
Our Practice… Annie O’Donnell launched her consulting practice in 2016, to support schools
and organizations striving to create intentionally diverse and equitable learning communities.
Annie brings a network of diverse talent with specialized expertise to support you and the
children and families who make decisions alongside you to reflect deeply on how your daily
habits align to your big purpose of creating diverse and equitable learning environments, and
to identify and design solutions that help you live out your big purpose in the day-to-day.
Our Beliefs…
America’s educational systemcan become a powerful force for creating a more
equitable country. To fulfill their promise, all schools must transform.
Achieving equity won’t happen by remaking schools that serve low-income children and
children of color in the image of those serving middle-class, affluent, and/or white
children. School must be radically transformed for those students, too.
This transformation must include creating intentionally diverse schools, racially and
socio-economically, that are aimed toward equity for all kids.
Ensuring true equity will require unique work for different groups of children and adults.
For example, for white children and adults, like myself, schooling should help us see and
break patterns of behavior that lead us to hoard power and resources and to view our
own culture and worldview as right and/or best. Schooling should teach us a complete
story of our country’s history, so we understand the context in which those patterns
have become the norm.
While there are many legal, policy, and system-level practices that need to be changed
to create integrated and equitable schools, such changes won’t have the desired effect
without real, deep relationships and human interactions across lines of difference,
within the local school building.
Schools that intend to be diverse and equitable benefit from supported reflection on
and development of the daily pedagogical, relational, curricular, and decision-making
habits that help form and strengthen those relationships and lead to equitable
outcomes.
