2. • The process involved when people in a group interact
with each other
• The overall success of a group is based on how well it
communicates
• Group discussions usually strengthen the group
members’ opinions creating group polarization
• Whether a group works well together is multi-
factorial. It depends on the members, the
environment and the group tasks(Tuckman, 1965)
Group Dynamics
3. Positive Interactions
• Be respectful to each group member
• Listen and consider each viewpoint
• Realize conflicts will happen, managing them
correctly can be very beneficial for group success
• Work on building trust
• Help build cohesion which makes the members
feel like they belong
Reaching Group Goals
4. Negative Interactions
• DE individuation occurs in certain situations where people
abandon their normal restraints, loose there sense of
individual identity and become responsive to group
norms (Myers, 205-210; Festinger, Pepitone, &
Newcomb, 1952).
• Interrupting members
• Using bias when agreeing or disagreeing
Reaching Group Goals
5. These are some of the things I try to focus on
when working in a group. Whether you are
volunteering at a nursing home or working in
any other group, if you use the positive
attributes and beware of negative ones, your
group will have a greater chance to reach its
overall goal.
