information on how to learn sign language, as well
as a dictionary. The dictionary allows viewers to
search a word of phrase and then shows a video

language. This is a great additional resource to
use in a classroom just like a dictionary on a
bookshelf would be.

There are many different reasons for teaching sign language in a classroom. For starters it is a great way to teach students that there are other ways of communication. What if there is a deaf or hard of hearing student in our class or school building? It is important for students to understand what this person might be going through. It is also a great way for students to be involved with any deaf or heard of hearing students in the community. They will be able to communicate better with them and make them feel more comfortable in a hearing environment. Another reason sign language can be utilized in the classroom is by communication between students and teachers. Simple signs for going to the bathroom or sharpening a pencil will make lessons run smoothly without interruptions. I think that teaching sign language, to a certain extent, is a great way to get students thinking about the world a little differently and have a better understanding of the deaf or heard of hearing community.
This slide, which was created on Kidspiration, will be helpful in the classroom. I imagine that I would use this to introduce the topic of sign language in the classroom. This would answer some basic questions that students might have. It explains exactly what sign language is and why we would be learning about it. I think this would be great to show on an Projector/Smart board. It is colorful and appealing to young children and will hopefully gain their interest.
The site that is linked to the picture of sign A is a great and resourceful site. The site offers worksheets, flash cards and other handouts on sign language. I could definitely see myself utilizing this site during a sign language unit.
The site that is connected to the “thumbs up” worksheet offers a variety of different worksheets to use in the classroom. The iTunes app is great way to link technology into the classroom. If iPads are accessible in the classroom this app will be very helpful for students during independent work. They can use this app to look up words in sign language. When they search the word, they can watch a video on how to communicate the word in sign language.
