2. DENZEL’S BACKGROUND
Diagnosed with a learning disability
Came from a poor family background
Bad neighborhood
Brother was shot at 23, Denzel was 11yrs old at the time.
At the age of 13, Denzel was chasing girls, skipping school,
spending nights away from home, shoplifting, getting into
fights with peers which resulted in getting charged with
assault.
3. DENZEL’S CASE
16-year-old Denzel Nowlin was sentenced to 3 1/2 to 7 years
in state prison after pleading guilty to armed robbery.
Denzel, who was 15 at that time of crime, and his friend
Gordon Hackaday forced their way into a Swissvale home
and demanded money from two women while waving guns.
Gordon, who also was 15, put a gun to one woman's head,
while Denzel fired a shot into the window.
He was charged as an adult, due to the seriousness of the
crime, and a judge ruled against sending his case to
juvenile court
4. PERSONALITY DISORDERS
Choice Theory - Theory that humans behavior is a directed
consequences of people’s conscious decisions to engage or not
engage in a particular behavior. ( Although Denzel was young at the time he
committed the crime , he was fully aware that what he was doing was wrong and that there
would be consequences )
Rational choice Theory – Theory suggesting that delinquents are
rational people who make calculated choices regarding what
they are going to do before they act. ( Although Denzel had a learning
disability, it doesn’t justify the fact that he was able to reason and know exactly what he was
doing when he walked in that house with Gordon and when he decided to fire the gun, had the
gun not been fire he might have had received less time. )
Strain Theory - Crime is caused by society telling children what to
seek without providing the means to do so. (Denzel’s Mother only had
Denzel left to help provide for the family . We can assume that perhaps Denzel felt that pressure
and decided to help provide for his family by any means possible which is what lead him to
commit the crime)
