make a
place
walkable
and
Bikeable?
BIKEABLE
: suitable or fit for biking (Merriam-Webster, n.d.).
: capable of being traversed by biking (Merriam-
Webster, n.d.).
WALKABLE
: capable of or suitable for being walked (Merriam-
Webster, n.d.).
: capable of being traveled, crossed, or covered by walking
(Dictionary.com, n.d.).
5. Benefits of Biking & Walking
Why should communities across the country embrace initiatives focused on increasing biking and walking? As it turns out, riding a
bike and walking have demonstrated a wide range of benefits. Embracing biking and walking campaigns can bolster personal health,
help communities thrive, and protect the environment.
Advocacy campaigns for bicycling and walking should be able to relay these benefits to towns and communities across the Country.

6. You’re Less Likely to
Die Early
Lower Risk of Heart
Disease & Stroke
Reduced Risk of
Cancer
Fighting the Diabetes
Epidemic
Increased Mental
Health
Reduced Traffic
As more people choose to bike and walk, roads across
the country will become less congested.
Social & Economic
Benefits
Cities that have embraced biking and walking campaigns tend
to be happy, healthy, educated, and economically stable.
Residents in towns where bicycling and walking are popular
have the opportunity to connect and engage with like-minded
people. Biking and walking help to foster a community spirit
and feeling of unity.
Environmental & Public Health Benefits
The climate is changing, and transportation is a leading cause. In fact, transportation is the leading contributor of greenhouse gases.
Why are greenhouse gases so bad for the environment? Greenhouse gases help to trap warmer temperature inside of the Earth’s atmosphere. This
increases the overall temperature around the globe. Rising temperatures adversely affect crops, agriculture, sea levels, wildlife, and insects and pests. As
temperatures continue to rise, America is experiencing more wildfires, more droughts, and increasing public health concerns.
Reducing traffic by choosing to bike or walk can reap incredible environmental benefits. Consider ditching your car and hopping on a bike or walking the next
time you need to go somewhere. Simply choosing environmentally-friendly modes of transportation some of the time can be incredibly beneficial.

9. MANILA, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Philippines is encouraging its people to turn to walking and biking in moving around during and even after
the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak.
By promoting active transport, the government aims to address the limitation of public transportation services and encourage more active
lifestyles, especially during lockdowns.
The Philippines remains under varying restriction levels since the initial lockdown imposed in mid-March limited the public transport system.
"(Given) the ongoing threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative that active modes of transport for commuters, including walking and
bicycling, be promoted to safely reach their workplaces," said the joint administrative order released on Thursday by the departments of health,
transportation, interior, and public works.
Philippine commuters, including medical frontliners and essential workers, struggle to get a ride to and from work due to spotty transportation
even as the Philippines eased lockdown restrictions to reopen the economy.

The government released "guidelines on the proper use and promotion of active transport during and after the pandemic."
"As the country implements community quarantine to further mitigate the spread of COVID-19, our daily activities must adapt to the new
normal," the Department of Health (DOH) said in a statement on Thursday, adding "the limited transport services paved the way for other
modes crucial for essential travel."
The order urges national government agencies and local government units (LGUs) to build protected bicycle lanes and walking paths, and
supportive infrastructure like bicycle racks and changing rooms.
Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said the use of active transportation, such as biking and walking, "is a viable addition and sustainable
supplement to existing modes of transportation."
"We acknowledge the health and environmental benefits it brings. It lessens air pollution that makes our immune system weak. This will play a
role as we transition into the new normal," Tugade added.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque said the "use of alternative means of active transport" will "ensure that our health workers, frontliners, and
other essential workers can safely get to their workplaces and destination."
Duque vowed to promote active transport even after the COVID-19 pandemic, "to encourage a more active lifestyle and safer roads for all."
"To weather the tides of this pandemic, all government agencies including LGUs should collaborate and unite to ensure the safety and health of
every Filipino," Duque added.
Public Works Secretary Mark Villar said the move is "to provide viable options to our citizens especially for civilians who would opt to walk or
use their bikes instead of vehicles."
The World Health Organization (WHO) has also advocated cycling and walking to limit physical contact to prevent and slow down the
pandemic.
Amid the COVID-19-induced lockdown in
the Philippines, the government encouraged people
to adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle by
walking and biking to commute, which is expected
to become part of the pandemic "new normal."

Our road corridors must have one-third of their space for
pedestrians and bicycle lanes, one-third for trees and
landscaping, and one-third for vehicles.
To help address the lack of alternative modes of
transportation in our cities, we recommend increasing
mobility by establishing green infrastructure like vast and
secure networks of pedestrian walkways and bicycle lanes.
Instead of focusing mostly on implementing car-centric
strategies, we should also prioritize creating multimodal
roads that are more walkable and bikeable and are safer,
greener, and cleaner.
