3. MAYNARD NGU
Cherry Mobile is a Philippine mobile
phone and electronics brand by
Cosmic Technologies, established by
Maynard Ngu in 2009. In 2010, barely
two years after it started, Cherry
Mobile was voted IT Company of the
Year in the 3rd CyberPress Awards,
upstaging some of the country's
technology giants.
4. • At 37 years old, Maynard Ngu, the young
CEO and visionary of Cherry Mobile has
proven to many that a proudly local
mobile brand can compete even against
international tech titans. Through premium
and affordable smartphones and devices
that promise a seamless mobile
experience, Cherry Mobile aims to hold
onto its position as the leading local
mobile phone brand in the country.
5. • In 2009, seven years ago,
entrepreneur Maynard Ngu had first
considered breaking into the mobile
phone scene by launching his own
brand – Cherry Mobile, his brainchild.
During that time, it seemed like an
impossible feat as the market then
was dominated by international tech
giants such as Nokia and Blackberry.
6. • But there was a great
opportunity for business,
and, more importantly, an
even greater demand for
affordable phones, which
Maynard knew he could fill
with Cherry Mobile. Starting
with four models, Maynard
launched Cherry Mobile to
be in the competition.

8. Everything for everyone
• Maynard was undoubtedly impressed, but not content. He had bigger visions
for the brand. Cherry Mobile was not here simply to provide mobile phones
that the market wanted, but offer products that would elevate the mobile
experience, as well as complement each individual’s lifestyle. He envisioned
Cherry Mobile to be a brand that has “Everything for everyone.”
9. Year 2010
• In 2010, a mere year after it was founded, Cherry Mobile was recognized as
the “IT Company of the Year” by the Cyber press Awards. It would snag
another prestigious award, this time from Yugatech, as the “Top Selling
Mobile Phone Brand” in 2013, beating industry heavyweights.
10. Explains maynard
• “At that time, handsets were so expensive – ranging around P25,000, so we
offered a quality product that appealed greatly to consumers who were
looking for a more affordable device,” explains Maynard.
14. Google’s Gmail
• Google’s Gmail, launched on the 1st April 2004, was the first true
landmark service to emerge from Google since its search engine
debuted in 1998.
16. Paul Buchheit
• Paul Buchheit started his career at Google in 1999, becoming
the company’s 23rd employee. He had been working in the
development of a web-based email that could also provide a
search engine within the already existing email
service. However, the idea to include a search engine within
Google’s email service was doubted strongly by many within
the company. Most thought it was a bad idea from both a
product and strategic point of view. In addition, there was
worry amongst company brass about stretching Google too far
beyond search, making the service publicly available.
17. • But these worries dissipated when Larry Page and Sergey Brin,
Founders of Google, decided to support Buchheit with his
project.
18. The Outcomes
• Gmail didn’t just blow away Hotmail and Yahoo Mail, the main
free webmail services of the day, but it went on to become a
dominant email service.
19. The Outcomes
• Gmail didn’t just blow away Hotmail and Yahoo Mail, the main
free webmail services of the day, but it went on to become a
dominant email service.
• Today Gmail has reportedly more than 1.5 billion global active
users, it has gone from a small experiment to becoming a key
service of Google’s product offering.
• Moreover, Gmail, and the way online advertising worked with
emails, eventually helped shape the Google AdSense
advertising programme and set the foundations for Google’s
online advertising service to generate $147 billion in revenue in
2020.
