TO OBSERVE:
i picked one place to write
about, chow, a restaurant in SF
in the Castro.
the sign outside was inviting.
the menu posted on the window.
i have ate here years ago and
the food is great. we all wanted
some home cooked food.
nothing stood out to me when
we walked in. i noticed the place
was packed, it was the night of
the giants world series game.
it was kind of dark, quiet music
playing, people talking.
there were mirrors placed to
make the place seem bigger, it
is a narrow space and it goes
far back. many people, and the
menu was placed to the left on
the wall above, written on a
chalk board. we weren’t placed
too close together.
i walked around taking
photos looking for something
interesting to catch my eye.
it just seemed like a typical
restaurant, but a yummy one.
we sat down, we were
celebrating my friends birthday.
and i still had not noticed
anything that stood out. but
as dinner went on, i realized
something was different then
my normal experience eating at
a busy restaurant. i noticed there
was music, a few tv blasting
the world series, people were
laughing, talking loud and yet

... i wasn’t holding my hand to my
ear to hear my friends talk.nor
was i yelling. i actually enjoyed
my entire dinner talking to
my friends and i didn’t have to
stop and say “i can’t hear you,
can you say that again please
because it is too loud in here.”
it was then i looked up.

and i figured out why i could
hear my friends talking. they
had placed a sound barrier
above all the tables to reflect
the sound. i am so amazed that
something so simple that i have
complained about so many
times at restaurants was easily
fixed by putting these sound
things above all the tables.
