- Hello, I am Jennifer and throughout the semester, I analyzed the hashtag #nobannowall on Twitter
- This topic is very important because it relates to the issue of U.S. immigration. The hashtag was created as an anti-Trump response to his new immigration policies particularly on the U.S.-Mexican border wall, Muslim immigration, and lack of protection and funding for sanctuary cities. The topic is important domestically and internationally. 13.5 percent of the U.S. are immigrants. Internationally, countries face challenges when accepting and integrating new immigrants. I analyzed my hashtag right after Trump signed the executive order that banned U.S. travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries.
- I found that that Users of hashtag attempted to talk to Donald Trump and reach out to individuals who supported him, Discussed Muslim Ban, not other components of issue (Due to time frame)
- In my word graph, I found that users included many resistance-related words to defy Trump including protest, impreach, resistance. All of the words related to the Muslim ban, not other components of the topic such as the wall or sanctuary cities.
- In my social network analysis graph, I found that different groups that had different viewpoints of the issues were connected and actively talked to one another about the issue. In particularly, users tried to reply to individual tweets that opposed their views with contradicting statements. For example, ACLU responded to conservatives about the success of immigrants.
- My findings relate to two articles read in class. Cheney Lippold defines that the Biopower - ”’Power over life’ through management of subjects at level of population.” You may tweet something criticizing or opposing Trump, but since you tweeted or replied to him a lot, you may be categorized as a Trump supporter. Katrin Tiidenberg and Nancy K. Baym discuss about how reigning discourses vs. conformity about pregnant women on social media. Pregnant women gain self worth and social capital if they have the resources to show off various materialistic stages of their pregnancy. Yet, if they do not have the resources to buy so many expensive items for their baby and themselves, they are not as well-known. For people within the resistance, should they tweet Trump or not?
