New
Beginnings

 New
Beginnings
Harvey Mudd College’s Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) has
recently been relocated to a new area of Platt Campus Center.
Moving out of a small, one room space and into a much larger
four room space has enabled OID to increase their programming,
hold more intimate conversations with students, and have a larger
presence in the Mudd community.

The new office space consists of a large community area, with
complete after-hours access for student organizations and clubs
that would like to utilize the space.

OID remains as a social justice education hub for the entire
campus, providing diversity education, social justice workshops,
open forums, and training sessions that aim to raise awareness,
and build skills for allyship for different communities. OID hopes
to go beyond traditional multicultural education to teach students,
faculty, and staff how to take action on issues that matter, and
provide a space for anyone to come in and just talk, check out
books or movies from the library – a platform for people that
might want to engage in difficult topics, learn from each other, or
just relax.
The Office of
Institutional Diversity
(OID) serves as a
social justice
education hub for the
entire Harvey Mudd
campus community.

Enhancing
Campus Climate

This year's OID book club
featured "The Invention of Wings"
by Sue Monk Kidd. The novel
showcases a true story of
women's quest for freedom and
desire to have a voice in the
world. In this eleventh round of
the book club, this year marked
the largest book club at HMC, as
thirty staff, faculty, and students
participated.
Book Club
Enhancing
Campus
Climate
Throughout the year, we provided trainings and insight for multiple staff and faculty departments on topics
ranging from unconscious bias reduction to microaggressions to combatting stereotype threat.
Pop-Up Allyship Trainings
OID hosted 11 Pop-Up trainings throughout
the year to support the campus community in
developing a more thorough understanding of
allyship and hone their abilities to serve as
allies (and accomplices) to various
marginalized communities. The training
provided the 10 best practices of allyship that
participants can use whether they are thinking
about particular student groups or larger
social movements like Black Lives Matter,
gender justice, immigrant rights, or other
intersectional movements.

New Beginnings Harvey Mudd College’s Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) has recently been relocated to a new area of Platt Campus Center. Moving out of a small, one room space and into a much larger four room space has enabled OID to increase their programming, hold more intimate conversations with students, and have a larger presence in the Mudd community. The new office space consists of a large community area, with complete after-hours access for student organizations and clubs that would like to utilize the space. OID remains as a social justice education hub for the entire campus, providing diversity education, social justice workshops, open forums, and training sessions that aim to raise awareness, and build skills for allyship for different communities. OID hopes to go beyond traditional multicultural education to teach students, faculty, and staff how to take action on issues that matter, and provide a space for anyone to come in and just talk, check out books or movies from the library – a platform for people that might want to engage in difficult topics, learn from each other, or just relax. The Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) serves as a social justice education hub for the entire Harvey Mudd campus community. 5

This year's OID book club featured "The Invention of Wings" by Sue Monk Kidd. The novel showcases a true story of women's quest for freedom and desire to have a voice in the world. In this eleventh round of the book club, this year marked the largest book club at HMC, as thirty staff, faculty, and students participated. Book Club Enhancing Campus Climate Throughout the year, we provided trainings and insight for multiple staff and faculty departments on topics ranging from unconscious bias reduction to microaggressions to combatting stereotype threat. Pop-Up Allyship Trainings OID hosted 11 Pop-Up trainings throughout the year to support the campus community in developing a more thorough understanding of allyship and hone their abilities to serve as allies (and accomplices) to various marginalized communities. The training provided the 10 best practices of allyship that participants can use whether they are thinking about particular student groups or larger social movements like Black Lives Matter, gender justice, immigrant rights, or other intersectional movements.
