Summary:
It was the busiest weekend of the year for Excalibur teams, as all teams were in action at home over the
course of the weekend.
The main event was the Head of the Trent, a grueling 5km race down the Otonabee River for our rowing
crews. The Excalibur welcomed over 445 boats from around Canada and the U.S. to compete in Varsity,
Junior Varsity, Masters, Grand Masters, Club, and Junior Divisions. Record gusting headwinds of over 50km/h
made getting down the course in one piece quite a challenge, let alone moving quickly. Big stories from this
weekend is single lightweight sculler Joshua King, who is continuing his season-long undefeated streak with a
win on his home turf this weekend. Graham Peeters placed 2nd
in the Men’s Heavyweight single division. It is
important to note that no Excalibur Varsity crew placed below 7th
place in any divisions they were entered in,
2. which is the sign of a strong program by the Excalibur Rowing coaches.
The big upset of this year’s HOTR however, was the Novice Eights, which saw the Trent men placed 1st
and 6th
and the Trent women placing 1st
and 4th
. Often bested by the eights from Western University, Trent has not had
a sweep of the novice eights division in many years – Until this year. The Novice development program is
meant to teach athletic individuals to row in a very short time, and a high-performance novice team is a sure-
fire sign of a healthy, sustainable rowing program.
Women’s Rugby put forth a convincing performance on Saturday morning, besting the Brock Badgers 29-24 in
a nose-to-the-grindstone match.
Men’s Rugby proved they are a force to be reckoned with in the OCAA, and are proving that they belong in the
OUA – which they will be joining come September 2016. The men put forth a very convincing win of 86-17 over
the Loyalist Lancers on Friday Night. Despite the cold, the stadium was packed with supporters.
In Volleyball action, the men and Women each faced double-headers versus the Royal Military College
Paladins.
