National Novel Writing Month is an event where participants attempt to write a 50,000-word novel between November 1-30. Started by Chris Baty in 1999 with 21 participants, it has grown significantly, with over 200,000 people participating in 2010 and writing a total of over 2.8 billion words collectively. To win NaNoWriMo, participants must write an average of about 1,667 words per day. The event values enthusiasm, determination, and meeting a deadline, and is open to anyone interested in writing a novel.
