  1. 1. Part 3 I visited to the SDA nurse aid school. Community Health Promoters’ Training Course (CHPTC) reported by Dr. Htaw Lay (Health Ministries Department of Myanmar Union Mission of SDA) You can see the picture in next slide Pr. Yan Aye, who is a retired pastor and he is a best friend of my father. Right now he is a Bible teacher and his wife Dr. Dora is a main teacher in nurse aid school.

Requirements for the training & Course subjects <ul><li>Requirement for the training </li></ul><ul><li>Must be a female. </li></ul><ul><li>Age limit between 18-30 </li></ul><ul><li>Passed the 9th standard </li></ul><ul><li>Course Subjects </li></ul><ul><li>Moral Instruction </li></ul><ul><li>Basic Medical Sciences </li></ul><ul><li>Medical Surgical and Communicable Diseases </li></ul><ul><li>Principles and Practices of Nursing </li></ul><ul><li>Community Health Nursing and Nutrition </li></ul><ul><li>First Aid and Emergency Care </li></ul><ul><li>Midwifery, Neonatal and Infants care </li></ul><ul><li>Dental Health Nursing and Essential Drugs </li></ul><ul><li>Disable and Geriatric Nursing </li></ul><ul><li>Temperance and Healthy Lifestyles </li></ul><ul><li>The duration of the course is 7 months (Every June to January) </li></ul><ul><li>Theory: 5 months </li></ul><ul><li>Practical: 2 months </li></ul><ul><li>Field Practical and Excursion, Evaluation is One month </li></ul>

Brief History of CHPTC <ul><li>The CHPTC was started in 1995 at Yangon, Insein Township under the responsibility of Health Ministries Department of Myanmar Union Mission of SDA </li></ul><ul><li>For the first year we had no boarding rooms. The batch of 18 trainees had to stay with their friends and relatives nearby. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1996, with the help of Japanese ADRA, we were able to build a boarding house and got some teaching materials. </li></ul><ul><li>Their Aim is </li></ul><ul><li>to provide proficiencies for the women who have less access to education and </li></ul><ul><li>financial support </li></ul><ul><li>In relieving the sick </li></ul><ul><ul><li>To help them for temporary relay </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To know the symptoms and contact to the nearest health workers </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To cooperate with workers in preventive and medical treatment </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To work individually and with the health workers for the health improvement of the families and people of the village. </li></ul></ul>

Where do they work after the course? <ul><li>Through many difficulties, we have been able to conduct the CHPTC for the past 14 years. </li></ul><ul><li>There are a total of nearly 600 graduates already. </li></ul><ul><li>We are very grateful to doctors and nurses who had assisted us throughout these hard times. </li></ul><ul><li>Up to the present time these trainees have to support themselves throughout the course. </li></ul><ul><li>They have to bear all the expenses by themselves. </li></ul><ul><li>After graduation, the trainees work at the following areas. </li></ul><ul><li>Mission Schools </li></ul><ul><li>Myanmar Frontier Mission Project </li></ul><ul><li>1000 Missionary Project </li></ul><ul><li>Mission Clinic </li></ul><ul><li>Private Clinic and Hospital </li></ul><ul><li>In their respective village as health promoters. </li></ul>
  7. 7. The school has only one class room and one skeleton model for students to learn from.

Special request from Dr. Htaw Lay Health Ministries Department of Myanmar Union Mission of SDA If any of you are willing to support the CHPTC, here are the things needed: <ul><li>Teaching models (Heart and Blood Vessels, Oral Cavity, Pelvic Cavity Dummy) </li></ul><ul><li>Installing of phone line (2800 US $) </li></ul><ul><li>DVD and TV for better teaching (US$ 300) </li></ul><ul><li>Cooking utensils (Rice cookers, fork, spoons and plates) </li></ul><ul><li>We decided that we will give them nutritious food starting from 2009 school year to promote healthy lifestyle. </li></ul><ul><li>In the past, they had to cook for their own food and had limited time for self-study. </li></ul><ul><li>If you want to sponsor a trainee, it would cost US $ 250 for the whole course that would cover tuition fees, uniform, boarding and food. </li></ul><ul><li>We would like to thank everyone who contributed through generous donation for the successful sustainability of the training.
