Week 7
Curriculum Implementation refers to how the
planned or officially designed course of study
is translated by the teacher into syllabuses,
schemes of work and lessons to be delivered to
students
 List three (3) factors that influence
curriculum implementation.
 Explain how any two of the factors listed
may influence curriculum implementation.
 The teacher’s role in curriculum implementation is
indisputable.
 Implementation takes place through the interaction of the
learner and the planned learning opportunities. Since it is
the teacher who selects and decides what to teach from
the prescribed curriculum, his role is a pivotal one.
 It is therefore important that the teacher understands the
curriculum document well, in order to implement it
effectively.
 Teachers should play a significant role in the designing of
the curriculum. In Guyana, a sample of teachers from
around the country attends workshops at the National
Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD),
where the curriculum is planned
 Learners are also a critical element in curriculum
implementation.
 While teachers are the arbiters of the classroom
practice, the learners hold the key to what is actually
transmitted and adopted from the official
curriculum.
 The official curriculum can be quite different from
the curriculum that is actually implemented.
 The learner factor influences teachers in their
selection of learning experiences, hence the need to
consider the diverse characteristics of learners in
curriculum implementation. For example, home
background and learner ability can determine what is
actually achieved in the classroom.
 Adequate resource and materials are
necessary for meaningful teaching to take
place.
 Textbooks, teaching aids and stationery are
needed to enable teachers and learners to
play their role satisfactorily in the
curriculum implementation process.
 Physical facilities such as classrooms,
laboratories, libraries and sport fields are
also necessary to provide a conducive
environment for implementation to take
place.
 Parent Teachers Associations, local
employers, church groups and local
government organizations also influence
curriculum implementation.
 These groups can provide schools with
financial resources to purchase required
materials, demand inclusion of certain
subjects in the curriculum and influence
learners to reject certain courses they
consider unacceptable
 One other factor that influences curriculum
implementation concerns the particular
circumstances of each school.
 Schools located in rich socio-economic
environments and those that have adequate
human and material resources can
implement the curriculum to an extent that
would be difficult or impossible for schools in
poor economic environments to implement.
 Cultural and ideological differences within a
society or country can also influence
curriculum implementation. Some
communities may resist a domineering
culture or government ideology and hence
affect the implementation of the centrally
planned curriculum.
Problems of curriculum implementation differ
from place to place. The particular
circumstances of each school as well as the
cultural and ideological differences within a
country such as Guyana play a major part in
curriculum implementation.
1.Identify four (4) problems in your school
which affect the successful implementation of
curriculum.
2.Suggest possible solutions for these
problems.
 lack of trained teachers
 inadequate materials
 poor physical environment
 absenteeism of pupils
 large classes
 resistance from pressure group
Choose a Subject area and topic of your choice
and write a General Objective and a Specific
Objective.

  • 2. Curriculum Implementation refers to how the planned or officially designed course of study is translated by the teacher into syllabuses, schemes of work and lessons to be delivered to students

  • 4.  List three (3) factors that influence curriculum implementation.  Explain how any two of the factors listed may influence curriculum implementation.
  • 5.  The teacher’s role in curriculum implementation is indisputable.  Implementation takes place through the interaction of the learner and the planned learning opportunities. Since it is the teacher who selects and decides what to teach from the prescribed curriculum, his role is a pivotal one.  It is therefore important that the teacher understands the curriculum document well, in order to implement it effectively.  Teachers should play a significant role in the designing of the curriculum. In Guyana, a sample of teachers from around the country attends workshops at the National Centre for Educational Resource Development (NCERD), where the curriculum is planned
  • 6.  Learners are also a critical element in curriculum implementation.  While teachers are the arbiters of the classroom practice, the learners hold the key to what is actually transmitted and adopted from the official curriculum.  The official curriculum can be quite different from the curriculum that is actually implemented.  The learner factor influences teachers in their selection of learning experiences, hence the need to consider the diverse characteristics of learners in curriculum implementation. For example, home background and learner ability can determine what is actually achieved in the classroom.
  • 7.  Adequate resource and materials are necessary for meaningful teaching to take place.  Textbooks, teaching aids and stationery are needed to enable teachers and learners to play their role satisfactorily in the curriculum implementation process.  Physical facilities such as classrooms, laboratories, libraries and sport fields are also necessary to provide a conducive environment for implementation to take place.
  • 8.  Parent Teachers Associations, local employers, church groups and local government organizations also influence curriculum implementation.  These groups can provide schools with financial resources to purchase required materials, demand inclusion of certain subjects in the curriculum and influence learners to reject certain courses they consider unacceptable
  • 9.  One other factor that influences curriculum implementation concerns the particular circumstances of each school.  Schools located in rich socio-economic environments and those that have adequate human and material resources can implement the curriculum to an extent that would be difficult or impossible for schools in poor economic environments to implement.
  • 10.  Cultural and ideological differences within a society or country can also influence curriculum implementation. Some communities may resist a domineering culture or government ideology and hence affect the implementation of the centrally planned curriculum.
  • 11. Problems of curriculum implementation differ from place to place. The particular circumstances of each school as well as the cultural and ideological differences within a country such as Guyana play a major part in curriculum implementation.
