Harvesting
FORAGING FOR SEAWEED, MUSHROOMS AND
OTHER CONRISH FIBRES. THERE ARE MANY STEPS
TO THE HARVESTING PROCESS THAT I WANT
TO EVALUATE. THIS IS WHY IT IS A RESERCH
METHOD, AS IT ITS GOONG TO ANSWER A
NUMBER OF QUESTIONS FOR ME.
• IS SEAWEED EASYTO HARVEST?
• IS THERE MUCH SEAWEED TO HARVEST?
• HOW LONG WILL ITTAKE?
• ARE THERE OTHER THINGS I SHOULD PREPARE
FOR NEXTTIME?
• IS SEAWEED EASYTO HARVEST? I
FOUND MOST OFTHE TYPES OF
SEAWEED I FOUND EASTTO CUT
AWAY FROM ITS BASE.ANYTHING
THATWS TOO HARD I JUST DECIDED
TO LEAVE TO GROW MORE.
• IS THERE MUCH SEAWEED TO
HARVEST? THE
WAS A HUGE NUMBER OF PLANTS
THATWERE READYTO HARVEST.
MORE THAN I HAD ORGHINALLY
THOUGHT. I EASILY COIULDVE
SPEANTTHE ENTIRE DAY
COLLECING SEAWEED AND FILLING
UP MULTIPLE BUCKETS.
• HOW LONG WILL ITTAKE? ID
SAY I WAS OUT FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS
,JUST SEARCHING FOR SPECIES
AND HARESTING .
• ARE THERE OTHER THINGS I
SHOULD PREPARE FOR NEXT
TIME? GLOVES WOULD BE BETTER
WATERPRROF , NEED CORRECT
SHOES, LIKE WELLIES TO FOLLOW
CORRECT PPE.AFTER DOING OTHER
EXPERIMENTS WITH SPECIES I
HOPE TO FINALISE WHAT MATERIAL
WORKS BESTAND THIS MATERIAL
DSHOULD SHAPE THE DESIGN
ATTRIBUTES.
DIFFERENT FIBRES ARE GOING TO TAKE DIFFER-
ENT DRYING TIMES WHICH NEEDS TO BE AC-
COUNTED FOR IN A PROCESS EVALUATION. THERE
ARE DIFFERENT WAYS WE CAN DRY MATERIALS
OUT , I ATTEMPTED TO DRY SEAWEED OUT BY
SIMPLY HANIGING IT OUT IN THE SUN. THIS TOOK
ABOUT 2-3 DAYS IN MID OCTOBER . I ALSO TRIED
TO DRY OUT MUSHROOMS USING DEHUMIDIFIER
BEADS, STRAIGHT AWAY IT BECAME EVIDENT TO
ME THAT THIS WASNT A SUSTAINABLE METHTH-
OD AND I SHOULD CONSIDER BUYINGG A ELEC-
TRIC DEHUMIDIFIER TO AVOID WASTE ASWELL AS
CUT DOWN DRYING TIME.
DRYING
My first
experiment
with
bioplastic was
unsuccessful,
the end
material was
lumpy,
unattractive
and not very
easy to work
with.
EXPERIMENTATION
ATTEMPT 01
1 cup of seaweed
1 tablespoon
mushrooms
1 tablespoon of
glycerin
1 tablespoon of
white vinegar
half cup of water
1 cup of dried
seaweed blended
1 cup of glycerin
half a cup of white
vinegar
boil seaweed, sieve
out half the water,
blend the rest. stir in
glycerin and vinegar.
heat the mixture
until thickened to a
sticky gel.
on greaseproof
paper, pour the
mixture.
tilt sheet around
until the mixture has
spread over the
surface and is the
thickness you want.

N/A
FOR THIS
EXPERIMENT
I WANTED TO DO
THINGS
DIFFERENTLY, MY
PLAN WAS TO
SIEVE OUT
LUMPY BIT AND I
ALSO JUST
WANTED TO USE
A SEAWEED
MIXTURE. I
BEGAN BY
BOILING THE
SEAWEEDDOWN
AND BLEND IT
AFTER BREAKING
DOWN ALL THE
SEAWEED INTO A
SOUPLIKE
MIXTURE WHICH I
WOULD THEN
DEVELOP THE
BIOPLASTIC
FROM. FROM
DOING THIS
PROCESS IVE
LEARNT THAT
SEAWEED
DOESNT BOIL
WELL. IT DIDNT
REALLY BECOME
ANY SOFTER, THE
MIXTURE WAS
EASIR TO BLEND
BUT IT NEEDED
SIEVING. THE
MIXTURE ITSELF
WAS VERY WET
SO TOOK A LOT
LONGER TO DRY.
ATTEMPT 02
too much vinegar
made the material
brital, it would not
come off the paper in
one peice.
ATTEMPT O3
half a cup of agar
half a cup of glycerin
5 tablespoon of
white vinegar
half cup of water
stir in all ingredients.
heat the mixture
until thickened to a
sticky gel.
on greaseproof
paper, pour the
mixture.
tilt sheet around
until the mixture
has spread over the
surface and is the
thickness you want.
let dry, this mixture
took about 30 mins
to dry.
ATTEMPT O4
This mixture was left too
long on heat, so the
mixture got burnt and
this was a result.
half a cup of agar
1 tablespoon of salt
half a cup of glycerin
1 tablespoon of
white vinegar
half cup of water
in a pan mix salt,
vinegar, water and
agar. stir until all
lumps have gone.
stir in glycerine .
heat the mixture
until thickened to a
sticky gel.
on greaseproof
paper, pour the
mixture.
tilt sheet around
until the mixture
has spread over the
surface and is the
thickness you want.
let dry, this never
dried, or hardened.
a more successful
attempt but still too
britlle to be able to use
functionally.
ATTEMPT O5
a cup of agar
1 tablespoon of salt

GYLLYNGVASE BEACH 25/10
Observation.
In this graphic
i have tried to
illustrate a few
things so that i can
use this as a guide
for future
harvesting so i can
manage my time
better and also
have a good
knowledge of the
general area and
whats growing. the
cross’ mark hot
spots where ive
seen a lot of algae
growing.
th green dashed
line shows the
route i took along
the coastal path to
see all the beaches.
i could only do the
whole path because
of the tide being
out.
ive illustrated
species that ive
found, ive then
numbered them to
mark where ive
found the species.

OF EVERY OBVERSATION OR
HARVEST IS VERY IMPORTANT
THIS IS THE INDICATOR OF
WHAT WILL BE GROWING, ALL
REASERCH IN THIS JOURNAL IS
DONE IN OCT- NOV.
• Himanthalia elongata (sea spagetthi)
• Ascophyllum (egg wrack)
• Fucus serratus (toothed wrack)
• Fucus vesiculosus(bladder wrack)
• Laminaria digitata (Oarweed)
• Pelvetia canaliculata
depending on what time of the year it
is customers will recieve personalised
seasonalo clothing that have been
adapted from materials derived
in cornwall. each season changes
depending on what is growing,
this bring a comnection between
consumer and nature, in that they
harness chaning seasons rather than
adding toxidity by over fertilisation to
bring the demand forward.

CRITICAL
REFLECTION
LO: 1,2,3,4,7
1. RESEARCH & CONTEXT
2. DESIGN PROCESS
3. COMMUNICATION
4. CREATIVITY
7. PROJECT MANAGEMENT.
for this project i feel i have done an extensive amount of research, all
3 of my project are fast fashion related so research is very tied up, but
this allowed me to have more detailed research with experiments and
do more practical work. i feel i couldve done with a few more context
pages to make it more evident the purpose of why we should be
changing design. i feel my design process is still a work in progress
as the material is not near ready at all to be a functional product, thi
being said as ive recorded experience with experiments and how i did it
and what measurements, it should be easy to develop more. i wouldve
liked to have visted a few different places, this is perhaps something i
could come back to, i wouldve visited, the seaweed company, perhaps
contacted a forager i n cornwall and the farms i mentioned earlier. i am
pleased with the outcome of the general layout of this portfolio, i think
some final touches need to be done still to make it more eye catching
but in general i think ive shown my work in a well organised way that
is easy to navigate, aswell as showing a range or different medias to
communicate my design idea. my presentation boards i feel need
the most work to be at a professional stage but i feel i have shown all
the relevent elements with informative or directive text. as i creative
person i get easily bored by project that arent creative, for me this was
my most exciting project. if were talking about chaning the system
and how society works why not make a product that can constantly
change and evolve, it leaves us with so much space for improvemnt
and growth. a vital part of fighting against fast fashion is learning,
learning new skills and knowledge so that as a whole community we
grow, rather than lacking responsibilty and want to change .my project
management for this project let me down a lot, i got some dates mixed
up so the gantt chart i made is incorrect , i did manage to organise the
last couple weeks better as i knew the correct deadlines, i dedicated
some days to the beach, taking photos , harvesting and some days
were dedicated half to experiments and half tto written work.

  • 7. Harvesting FORAGING FOR SEAWEED, MUSHROOMS AND OTHER CONRISH FIBRES. THERE ARE MANY STEPS TO THE HARVESTING PROCESS THAT I WANT TO EVALUATE. THIS IS WHY IT IS A RESERCH METHOD, AS IT ITS GOONG TO ANSWER A NUMBER OF QUESTIONS FOR ME. • IS SEAWEED EASYTO HARVEST? • IS THERE MUCH SEAWEED TO HARVEST? • HOW LONG WILL ITTAKE? • ARE THERE OTHER THINGS I SHOULD PREPARE FOR NEXTTIME?
  • 8.
  • 9. • IS SEAWEED EASYTO HARVEST? I FOUND MOST OFTHE TYPES OF SEAWEED I FOUND EASTTO CUT AWAY FROM ITS BASE.ANYTHING THATWS TOO HARD I JUST DECIDED TO LEAVE TO GROW MORE. • IS THERE MUCH SEAWEED TO HARVEST? THE WAS A HUGE NUMBER OF PLANTS THATWERE READYTO HARVEST. MORE THAN I HAD ORGHINALLY THOUGHT. I EASILY COIULDVE SPEANTTHE ENTIRE DAY COLLECING SEAWEED AND FILLING UP MULTIPLE BUCKETS. • HOW LONG WILL ITTAKE? ID SAY I WAS OUT FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS ,JUST SEARCHING FOR SPECIES AND HARESTING . • ARE THERE OTHER THINGS I SHOULD PREPARE FOR NEXT TIME? GLOVES WOULD BE BETTER WATERPRROF , NEED CORRECT SHOES, LIKE WELLIES TO FOLLOW CORRECT PPE.AFTER DOING OTHER EXPERIMENTS WITH SPECIES I HOPE TO FINALISE WHAT MATERIAL WORKS BESTAND THIS MATERIAL DSHOULD SHAPE THE DESIGN ATTRIBUTES.
  • 10. DIFFERENT FIBRES ARE GOING TO TAKE DIFFER- ENT DRYING TIMES WHICH NEEDS TO BE AC- COUNTED FOR IN A PROCESS EVALUATION. THERE ARE DIFFERENT WAYS WE CAN DRY MATERIALS OUT , I ATTEMPTED TO DRY SEAWEED OUT BY SIMPLY HANIGING IT OUT IN THE SUN. THIS TOOK ABOUT 2-3 DAYS IN MID OCTOBER . I ALSO TRIED TO DRY OUT MUSHROOMS USING DEHUMIDIFIER BEADS, STRAIGHT AWAY IT BECAME EVIDENT TO ME THAT THIS WASNT A SUSTAINABLE METHTH- OD AND I SHOULD CONSIDER BUYINGG A ELEC- TRIC DEHUMIDIFIER TO AVOID WASTE ASWELL AS CUT DOWN DRYING TIME. • 13. My first experiment with bioplastic was unsuccessful, the end material was lumpy, unattractive and not very easy to work with. EXPERIMENTATION ATTEMPT 01 1 cup of seaweed 1 tablespoon mushrooms 1 tablespoon of glycerin 1 tablespoon of white vinegar half cup of water
  • 14.
  • 15. 1 cup of dried seaweed blended 1 cup of glycerin half a cup of white vinegar boil seaweed, sieve out half the water, blend the rest. stir in glycerin and vinegar. heat the mixture until thickened to a sticky gel. on greaseproof paper, pour the mixture. tilt sheet around until the mixture has spread over the surface and is the thickness you want. let dry, thisdidn'tdry N/A FOR THIS EXPERIMENT I WANTED TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY, MY PLAN WAS TO SIEVE OUT LUMPY BIT AND I ALSO JUST WANTED TO USE A SEAWEED MIXTURE. I BEGAN BY BOILING THE SEAWEEDDOWN AND BLEND IT AFTER BREAKING DOWN ALL THE SEAWEED INTO A SOUPLIKE MIXTURE WHICH I WOULD THEN DEVELOP THE BIOPLASTIC FROM. FROM DOING THIS PROCESS IVE LEARNT THAT SEAWEED DOESNT BOIL WELL. IT DIDNT REALLY BECOME ANY SOFTER, THE MIXTURE WAS EASIR TO BLEND BUT IT NEEDED SIEVING. THE MIXTURE ITSELF WAS VERY WET SO TOOK A LOT LONGER TO DRY. ATTEMPT 02
  • 16. too much vinegar made the material brital, it would not come off the paper in one peice. ATTEMPT O3 half a cup of agar half a cup of glycerin 5 tablespoon of white vinegar half cup of water stir in all ingredients. heat the mixture until thickened to a sticky gel. on greaseproof paper, pour the mixture. tilt sheet around until the mixture has spread over the surface and is the thickness you want. let dry, this mixture took about 30 mins to dry.
  • 17. ATTEMPT O4 This mixture was left too long on heat, so the mixture got burnt and this was a result. half a cup of agar 1 tablespoon of salt half a cup of glycerin 1 tablespoon of white vinegar half cup of water in a pan mix salt, vinegar, water and agar. stir until all lumps have gone. stir in glycerine . heat the mixture until thickened to a sticky gel. on greaseproof paper, pour the mixture. tilt sheet around until the mixture has spread over the surface and is the thickness you want. let dry, this never dried, or hardened.
  • 18. a more successful attempt but still too britlle to be able to use functionally. ATTEMPT O5 a cup of agar 1 tablespoon of salt half a cup of glycerin 5 tablespoons of white vinegar half cup of water in a pan mix salt, vinegar, water and agar. stir until all lumps have gone. stir in glycerine . heat the mixture until thickened to a sticky gel. on greaseproof paper, pour the mixture. tilt sheet around until the mixture has spread over the surface and is the thickness you want. let dry, this took about 10 mins to dry.

  • 27. In this graphic i have tried to illustrate a few things so that i can use this as a guide for future harvesting so i can manage my time better and also have a good knowledge of the general area and whats growing. the cross’ mark hot spots where ive seen a lot of algae growing. th green dashed line shows the route i took along the coastal path to see all the beaches. i could only do the whole path because of the tide being out. ive illustrated species that ive found, ive then numbered them to mark where ive found the species.

BLUEBERRIES - DIM PINKY RED RED CABBAGE - DARK PURPLE RED ONION - PURPLEY RED TURMERIC -MUSTARD YELLOW RESUSLT FROM NATURL DYES WERE MORE SUCCESSFULTHAN I FOUGHTTHEYD BE .WITH YELLOW BEING THE MOST STRONG COLOUR TO COME THROUGH ASWELLAS FINDING DIFFERENT SHADES THAT FRUITS AND VEG MAKE. ITWAS ALSO INTERESTING TO SEE WHATVEG DIDNT SHOWANY COLOUR THOUGH ATALL. SURPRISINGLY BLUEBERRIES WERE THE WEAKEST COLOUR TO COME THROUGH ALTHOUGH WITH TIME THE COLOUR COULD PICK UP. FOR MY BIOPLASTIC I USE WATER TO MAKE THE MATERIAL SO BOILING CERTAIN DYES UP CAN BE EASILYADDED TO THE MIXTURE.

  • 41. WE LIVE IN A INDECISIVE CONSUMPTION OBSESSED SOCIETY, EVERY FASHION CHOICE WE MAKE SEEMS TO CORRELATE BACK TO A PATTERN OF DISTRIVE BEHAVIOUR . OUR MINDS WARPED BY MARKETIGN AND OUR SENSE OF RESPONSIBILTY we live in a world over run my consumerism. where being cheap and meeting a damnad is more inportant than a human life. cotton field are covered in pesticides and harmful fertilizersexposing harmful diseases to farmers, children are forced to work early hours until late, on very little pay, many studies suggest children as young as 5 working in these conditions. a linear approach towars clothing has been adopted which has proven t have a huge negative impact on the environment. with devastated river in asia that are contaminated, and heaps of clothing the get incinerated every day becuase they cant be sold on due to damage. and poor quality. clothes are designed not to last, made cheapy with an unsustainable material that is likely to last up to 200 years.
  • 42. Synthetic garments are the biggest source of microplastic pollution in the oceans because up to 1900 fibres can be washed off one garment every time it is washed.
  • 43. SUBSCRIBE bag made by order so no wastage, this makezs the concept more personal, delivered straight to the customers door, cutting down on trvale emissions . made in cornwall, with cornish materials. worn for 1 month, a shorter period than the bag should last, so that it doent break during use period. bag is left by door to be collected bag used as plant food to go towards harvesting of new crops in cornwall. discover new bags each month online.

  • 55. I AM NOTVERY PLEASED WITH THE RESULTS OF MY SCETCHES, I FEELTHATTHIS IS SOMETHING I WOULD NEED ASSISTANCE FROM A FASHION DESIGNER FOR THE BAG TO LOOK REALYAPPEALLING AND FOR THE MATERIALTO USE ITS FULL POTENTIAL. EACH BAG WILL ONLY LASTA FEW MONTHS SO DESIGNS FOR THIS PROJECTWILL BE EVER CHANGING, UPDATED AND DEVELOPING. I ALSO WANTTO DESIGN THE BAGS SO THATTHEYARE FULLY OPTIMISED SO THAT ITWONT EVER BREAK WHILE IN USE, I WANTTO DEVELOP SOME LEVEL OFTRUST BETWEEN CONSUMER AND BRAND.
  • 56. CRITICAL REFLECTION LO: 1,2,3,4,7 1. RESEARCH & CONTEXT 2. DESIGN PROCESS 3. COMMUNICATION 4. CREATIVITY 7. PROJECT MANAGEMENT. for this project i feel i have done an extensive amount of research, all 3 of my project are fast fashion related so research is very tied up, but this allowed me to have more detailed research with experiments and do more practical work. i feel i couldve done with a few more context pages to make it more evident the purpose of why we should be changing design. i feel my design process is still a work in progress as the material is not near ready at all to be a functional product, thi being said as ive recorded experience with experiments and how i did it and what measurements, it should be easy to develop more. i wouldve liked to have visted a few different places, this is perhaps something i could come back to, i wouldve visited, the seaweed company, perhaps contacted a forager i n cornwall and the farms i mentioned earlier. i am pleased with the outcome of the general layout of this portfolio, i think some final touches need to be done still to make it more eye catching but in general i think ive shown my work in a well organised way that is easy to navigate, aswell as showing a range or different medias to communicate my design idea. my presentation boards i feel need the most work to be at a professional stage but i feel i have shown all the relevent elements with informative or directive text. as i creative person i get easily bored by project that arent creative, for me this was my most exciting project. if were talking about chaning the system and how society works why not make a product that can constantly change and evolve, it leaves us with so much space for improvemnt and growth. a vital part of fighting against fast fashion is learning, learning new skills and knowledge so that as a whole community we grow, rather than lacking responsibilty and want to change .my project management for this project let me down a lot, i got some dates mixed up so the gantt chart i made is incorrect , i did manage to organise the last couple weeks better as i knew the correct deadlines, i dedicated some days to the beach, taking photos , harvesting and some days were dedicated half to experiments and half tto written work.
