Editor's Notes

  1. Mike starts
  2. LOUIS had a goal of making sure that the migration to Enterprise did not represent a downgrade in any functionality.
  3. 47 member institutions - including LSU, Tulane, and the University of Louisiana system - and specifically University of Louisiana Lafayette
  4. Using Symphony for a long time - e-Library used for a long time by staff and patrons, many customized functions
  5. Marcy section
  6. Janelle starts: Good morning, my name is Janelle Zetty, and I am the Head of Cataloging at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Our university is a member of the LOUIS consortium, and I will be covering necessary customizations that we decided to implement in house. We were brand new to Enterprise, and I’m sharing our experience to help other Enterprise newbies.
  7. To get an overview of how Enterprise works, I read up on Enterprise on the SirsiDynix Support Center Website. This website is a valuable resource which includes documents, training, and listservs. My favorite resource is the listservs because they are full of helpful people. The archives are searchable, so if you have a question about something, someone has likely discussed it. Our university immediately recognized the need for Enterprise customizations. LOUIS did the initial implementation and was on hand to answer questions and concerns. However, our site had the flexibility to make customizations in-house. To understand the customization process, I partnered with our IT Specialist, Laurie Vanderbrook and combined our knowledge of cataloging, HTML, and CSS. It was learning experience, and I recommend diving in and getting a feel for it. There are terms and specific sets of steps to get used to. My goal for this presentation is to walk you through some of the necessary steps.
  8. To begin, these are the five steps for making a MARC field visible in Enterprise. Once you get this down pat, you’re on your way to a basic, essential configuration. Step 1.) Add MARC Maps in Search Configuration, Step 2.) Add Search Field, Step 3.) Select field in Search Sources, Step 4.) Select field in Detail Display, and finally, Step 5.) Run full harvest. So in the first step, with add MARC maps, you’re linking to the MARC field in Workflows, then with add search field, you’re creating a link in Enterprise. With the detail display, you’re bringing over the search field to show in displays. Finally, when you run the full harvest, you make your changes permanent.
  9. Making MARC fields visible. Once you implement Enterprise, check your detailed display. Does it look like you want it to? If you’re a systems administrator without cataloging experience, compare notes with your cataloger. The cataloger can determine which useful fields are missing from the display. For example, the Enterprise default settings for the table of contents field, which is MARC field 505, only displays the subfield a. Subfields such as t (title), r (statement of responsibility), and g (miscellaneous information) are not displayed. To display these or to create an entirely new MARC map, go to Search configuration > MARC maps.
  10. Add the MARC map, then configure your tag and subfield maps.
  11. Then add the Search Field under Search Configuration and select the created MARC map.
  12. Then go to Search Configuration > Discovery Search Sources > Edit the Discovery Search Source > and move the field from available to selected.
  13. And finally, to make the MARC field visible in Enterprise, go to Displays and select the area you would like the field to show. Last, run a full harvest by going to Scheduled Tasks and Search Source Tasks.
  14. Changing the name of MARC fields. Let’s say you want to customize the display names of the MARC fields such as title, personal author, table of contents, etc., To do so, go to Search Configuration > Discovery Search Targets > and Click the Edit icon for the appropriate search target. Next, change the text in the Name field to what you wish to display. Click the OK button at the bottom of the screen to save the changes and refresh the cache.
  15. You can also turn your MARC fields into clickable links. For example, as you can see, the added authors in this record are clickable. (next) To turn this on, go to Search Configuration > Search fields > Edit Search Fields. Change dropdown menu to General Search. Don’t choose hyperlink from the dropdown menu.
  16. Let’s say you want your users to have the ability to click on an author, subject, or series in a detail display and have that information pop up in their respective search fields. There’s a widget for that created by SirsiDynix. So, with the widget, if you click on the series Human rights in history, the term will populate a series search on the main search page, like so:
  17. If you look at the top, you’ll see the search term inserted into the search box according to the appropriate index. To create a new widget, go to the Enterprise Admin webpage, then Displays > HTML widgets > Newsearch indexes, which forces the links for Author, Subject, Series, Added Author and Added Title to use those indexes. The code was copied from the Developer’s Community on the SirsiDynix Support page. The name of the widget is HTML Widget for Detail Display to force the Author, Subject and Series hyperlinks to their respective search fields. Any site can submit their own custom code to the Developer’s Community. Other useful widgets are available on the community source code page, such as Excel-based bill notices, a larger full detail screen for Enterprise, a scrolling cover art book carousel, and a Goodreads button.
  18. Let’s say you want to create a holdings box for the search results display. There’s also a widget for that. Again, you’d go to the Enterprise Admin page, then Displays > HTML widgets, then scroll down to newsearch indexes. This widget was also copied from Developer’s Community on the SirsiDynix Support page, named “Show item holdings on Enterprise Search Results pages.”
  19. We realized there was an issue with the saved list function on the search results page. When saved lists were printed or emailed, the call number and location weren’t displayed. The reason for this was because we moved these to the holdings box on the item results page with the holdings widget. We didn’t want this information to appear twice in the item results list, so Laurie found a workaround for this. She added the call number and location to the item results page but hid them from public view with a CSS code.
  20. Our academic library has two satellite branches on campus consisting of children’s materials, a collection at a local art museum, and a collection devoted to sugar cane manufacturing located in a town about an hour away. We wanted to make it clear to the user where these libraries are. We customized the facets, adding room numbers and the name of the town, as you can see above. To customize facets, Go to Search configuration > Display codes. Under Site specific display fields, then in the Search field dropdown menu, choose Library then click View display codes.
  21. We improved the accuracy of search results by adjusting the Fuzzy Search Factor. The fuzzy search is applied separately to each word in search terms. Records will only be returned if each word in your search term matches at least one word in one of the fields in the fuzzy search. When calculating the match, the word in the search term will be compared to the words in the record. A match will be found if the percentage of characters that do not need to be changed is higher than the entered fuzzy search factor. Example: When the term “Geno Delofose”, which is the name of a zydeco musician, was searched books by the author with the last name Zeno was returned. We determined that the default search was too loose. It increased the number of results and pushed the desired results to the bottom of the list. To fix this, we adjusted our fuzzy search factor from .7 (70%) to .8 (80%). To modify the fuzzy logic, go to Profiles > Edit profile, then adjust your Fuzzy Search Factor.
  22. We configured the format icons to only appear on the detailed search results, as we felt that it cluttered the main search results list. However, many archival items were cataloged with brief records, which displayed the format type as “Other” in Enterprise. Some of our users found this confusing. We changed this to read “Miscellaneous Items.”
  23. To change the name for your format icons, go to Search Configuration > Display Codes > View display codes > Click on options and change the name.
  24. Finally, Laurie took the standard SirsiDynix Help Guide and tailored it to our needs. She added university branding to give a tailored and user-friendly look.
  25. Please explore the possibilities with Enterprise custom configuration and don’t be intimidated. Try it out, if you don’t like it you can always can change it back!
  26. Mike start: HTML widget is the Enterprise phrase for html and javascript snippets which can be embedded using the Enterprise admin interface. Many HTML widgets are already available on the SirsiDynix Developers Community site. I’m going to highlight those that duplicate a function that LOUIS sites had in their e-Library instances.
  27. There’s another HTML widget that is similar to this one, but I couldn’t get it to work. I notice that one has been updated since I tried, so it might work now. This is the version that I used.
  28. Janelle mentioned a widget that displays the MARC holdings. Enterprise will display MARC holdings, but it doesn’t include the call number. Here’s a screenshot of how the Holdings display “out of the box”
  29. SD Support was able to help us get started on a different HTML widget that would allow us to customize the display, for instance, to include the Call Number.
  30. Another method of displaying MARC holdings is this code. I think the HTML widget came from Mississippi State University (? - I can’t find it in the Support Center). It pulls the MARC holdings and displays them in nearly an identical fashion as to how they are displayed in e-Library. They appear in the body of the detail display (instead of in a table).
  31. Used jQuery to add custom login instructions - not easy “out of the box” - but most sites required it and they had it from e-Library days. Also some work on 856 link display (Access online)
