1. Question1
In whatwaysdoesyour mediaproductuse,developorchallenge formsandconventionsof real
mediaproducts?
Our filmopeningwhichwe namedhallowedgroundissupposedtocome underthe genre “Horror”,
but more specificallyitisa“psychological Horror”so we aimeditat a more sophisticatedaudience
as we knewthat theywouldhave abetterunderstandingof whatwe were tryingtoaccomplish.
The hard thingfor us to try andaccomplishwasmakingsure that our filmopening“Hallowed
Ground” fittedintothe veryspecificgenre we wanted “Psychological Horror”.One of my fearsfor
our piece wasthat ourfilmopeningmightfall intoa differentareaof the horror genre
I will nowtalkyouthroughour openingof a psychological horrorandtryand explaintoyouwhichof
the typical conventionswe followedandwhyandalsowhichoneswe challengedandwhy.
To make sure that our filmopening“HallowedGround”fellintothe “psychological horror”genre we
didplentyof researchinto existingmediatextsthatalsofall intothe same specificgenre.
Tittle choices:
Overall our filmopeningisverymuchlike insidiousandmanyotherpsychological horrorsandhere
are some of the reasons.
Many horrors use unusual andcreepyfontsandtendto use fairlylarge fontsizestohelpgive you
the impression of whatthe filmwillbe like before youactuallyseethe film. Asyoucan our title
hallowedgrounddoesnotlookas professional asthe tittle createdbythe horrorinsidious, butyou
can see that we were tryingtoreplicate thisconventionusedby psychological. The reasonthatwe
couldnot dothis to lookasgood as it doesinprofessional filmsisbecause we werelimitedbythe
technologiesthatwe coulduse tocreate are Title and credit sequence.
2. I also noticed that psychological horrors tend to use intergraded/overlapped credit
sequences as they relate to the story line of the film and either give you a feeling for the film
or just take you straight in to the plot of the film.
When we put our credit sequence in to the opening scene of our filmhallowed ground we
decided to do ours overlapped as it fitted in to the conventions of many horror films like
insidious 1 and 2 and also films like paranormal activity.
We decided to follow this convention as we wanted to follow as many conventions of a
psychological horror as possible as we were struggling to give it the feel that we wanted to.
Anotherconventionof psychological horrorsistohave a female killerwhichtendstohave
psychological orphysical problemwhichdrivesthemtodowhattheydo. A goodexample wouldbe
the younggirl who killspeople fromthe ringwhohasa physicallyproblemandisalsotroubled
mentally.
We triedtogo alongwiththisconventionbymakingourantagonista female,butwe alsoaskedto
act calm and emotionlesswhilecommittingthe murdertomake people thinkshe mighthave a
psychological problembecauseof the lackof emotionshownafterthe act.
3. Many horror filmslike toshowlotsof bloodandgore and you generallydonothave towaitvery
longto see it,but as our filmisa psychological horroritisnotall about the visuallyside of the
killings.Soasour audience ismostlikelygoingtobe more sophisticated theydonotneedtosee the
all the bloodand gore to be interestedandscaredbythe film.
Alsowe wouldof struggledtogo alongwiththisconventionaswe donothave the level of makeup
skillsneededtomake abloodyandgory scene realisticsowe triedtostay awayfromdoingit, but
overall Ibelieveitaddedtothe overeffectof the film
