Chongqing’s economic growth in 2017 was 9.4%, making it one of the fastest growing areas of China. In 2015, the Chongqing Government issued 《重庆市建设国家重要现代制造业基地“⼗三五”规划》 which clearly sets specific goals for a number of strategic industries. Although specific goals of each strategic industry differ, they come together to make one central goal:By 2020, the output of strategic industries in Chongqing will reach 1 trillion RMB，and its added value will make up 30% of Chongqing’s total added value.

Chongqing’s Strategic Industries
Chongqing’s economic growth in 2017 was 9.4%,
making it one of the fastest growing areas of China.
Chongqing’s 2017 GDP reached 1950 billion RMB,
while Tianjin’s GDP was 1859.5 billion RMB (See
chart 1). Having passed Tianjin, Chongqing now is the
5th largest economic city, and is competing to become
a 1st tier city in China. The 2018 goal for economic
growth in Chongqing is 8.5%.
Chongqing’s industrial output increased by 9.6%
(secondary industry GDP was 859 billion yuan)。
Industry growth is powered by Chongqing “6+1”pillar
industries (See chart 2). 2017 marked the turning
point for Chongqing’s electronic manufacturing
industry, as it overtook the automotive industry to
become the number one pillar industry. The auto
industry had a slow growth year due to weak results
from Changan and Changan Ford’s locally produced
models.
Due to the changing economy both globally and
China, Chongqing has put strong pressure to
transform its industries. In 2015, the Chongqing
Government issued 《重庆市建设国家重要现代制
造业基地“⼗三五”规划》 which clearly sets specific
goals for a number of strategic industries. Although
specific goals of each strategic industry differ, they
come together to make one central goal:By 2020, the
output of strategic industries in Chongqing will reach
1 trillion RMB，and its added value will make up
30% of Chongqing’s total added value.
Although Chongqing has made remarkable progress,
it still has some work to do in order to achieve the
2020 target. In particular, Chongqing must create
more than 600 billion RMB in the next three years
from these strategic industries to hit the original goal.

2. In 2015, Chongqing selected ten strategic industries to help transform its economy, including:
electronic core components, Internet of things, robots and smart equipment, new materials, high-
end transportation equipment, new energy vehicles and smart cars, MDI and new chemical
materials, shale gas, biomedicine/pharmaceuticals, and environmental protection. The goal of this
strategy is to create 10 new industries that will create 1 trillion RMB in output. In 2017, the city
of Chongqing had 468 enterprises operating in the strategic industries, achieving an output value
of 359.16 billion yuan, an increase of 32.6% (in 2016, output value was 270 billion yuan).
