3. copyright in games
A copyright is an exclusive right of an author to
do certain things with his/her creations,
including copying, distributing, performing,
and selling the works. Creating derivative
works, or works made based on a previous
work, is also exclusive to the copyright holder.
If you write a book about a man who finds
himself in the middle of a conspiracy involving
the Catholic Church and Leonardo DaVinci
after reading The DaVinci Code, you could be
in violation of the copyright since only Dan
Brown has the right to create a work based off
of that book. Similarly, translations are also
derivative works. After all, a Spanish or
Chinese translation of Dan Brown’s novel is still
a work based off of his novel.
4. Trademark
The PopCap® brand is synonymous with fun,
high-quality, casual games. PopCap Games
offers interactive entertainment that can be
played by downloading it to your personal
computer, online through your Web browser,
and, in some cases, on your mobile phone,
PDA, console or other standalone device.
PopCap trademarks represent extremely
valuable assets of the company because they
represent the standards of excellence and
consistent quality associated with the world’s
leading developer of casual games.
5. Patent
The word patent originates from the Latin patere, which means "to lay open" (i.e., to make
available for public inspection). More directly, it is a shortened version of the term letters
patent, which was a royal decree granting exclusive rights to a person, predating the modern
patent system. Similar grants included land patents, which were land grants by early state
governments in the USA, and printing patents, a precursor of modern copyright.
In modern usage, the term patent usually refers to the right granted to anyone who invents
any new, useful, and non-obvious process, machine, article of manufacture, or composition of
matter. Some other types of intellectual property rights are also called patents in some
jurisdictions: industrial design rights are called design patents in the US, plant breeders' rights
are sometimes called plant patents, and utility models and Gebrauchsmuster are sometimes
called petty patents or innovation patents.
The additional qualification utility patent is sometimes used (primarily in the US) to distinguish
the primary meaning from these other types of patents. Particular species of patents for
inventions include biological patents, business method patents, chemical patents and software
patents.
6. Registered designs
a design for a product that is recorded on an
official list with the patent office and is
protected so that it cannot be copied, although
it does not have a patent legal right to be the
only person or company to make or sell a
product for a particular number of years.
8. violence
When it comes to the ethical choices that
game developers make when they decide what
to put into their creations, they face the same
moral issues that artists in any other
communications medium face. They must
struggle with balancing their rights to free
expression with the tastes of consumers and
be concerned about the effects their content
has on their audience. While it's easy for
games to enlighten and enliven the human
experience, they are still a form of media and
expression, and thus possessed of the ability to
influence those that play them.
9. Rating
The Pan-European Game Information (PEGI)
age rating system was established to help
European parents make informed decisions on
buying computer games. It was launched in
spring 2003 and replaced a number of national
age rating systems with a single system now
used throughout most of Europe.
The system is supported by the major console
manufacturers, including Sony, Microsoft and
Nintendo, as well as by publishers and
developers of interactive games throughout
Europe. The age rating system was developed
by the Interactive Software Federation of
Europe (ISFE).
10. Education
There are lots of reasons that games can be used for educating but such games as
Call of Duty, Fifa and GTA are not that educational as they have a lot of online abuse
and also apart from Fifa contain a lot of violent content.
Games such as brain training are very good for education as it provides daily
training quizzes and lots of other puzzles to go through to keep your brain going.
